Book Excerpt :

When Broken meets Beautiful. Melody Spencer has a plan: work hard, stay focused and save enough money to get out of Stone Cliff and the rumors that surround her. Wounded and distrustful, she’s learned the hard way that if a guy is nice to her, it means he’s only after one thing. Until Ryeland Montgomery cruises back into her resort town, beautifully protective as he insists they get to know each other better. Ryeland’s future is in the palm of his hands. Problem is it’s the future his hard-nosed father has chosen for him, not the one he wants. Warned by his folks to steer clear of the local girls who will do whatever it takes to escape the sleepy mountain town, he’s always played the good son and kept his distance. Until he sees Melody, sweet yet tough, standing on the road side, drenched and furious—a girl he knows he has to have. Soon this unlikely pair find themselves lost in each other, and after a whirlwind summer of passion and pleasure, he vows to protect her from everything and everyone. But when secrets unfold, Melody is forced to make the toughest decision of her life and Ryeland must determine whether he's wasted the summer on nothing more than a beautiful lie, or if they can move past the deceit and rebuild the wreckage that has become their lives.

Book Short Summary:

Late life is characterized by great diversity in memory and other cognitive functions. Although a substantial proportion of older adults suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, a majority retain a high level of cognitive skills throughout the life span. Identifying factors that sustain and enhance cognitive well-being is a growing area of original and translational research. In 2009, there are as many as 5.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, and that figure is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. One in six women and one in 10 men who live to be at least age 55 will develop Alzheimer’s disease in their remaining lifetime. Approximately 10 million of the 78 million baby boomers who were alive in 2008 can expect to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Seventy percent of people with Alzheimer’s disease live at home, cared for by family and friends. In 2008, 9.8 million family members, friends, and neighbors provided unpaid care for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. The direct costs to Medicare and Medicaid for care of people with Alzheimer’s disease amount to more than $148 billion annually (from Alzheimer’s Association, 2008 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures). This book will highlight the research foundations behind brain fitness interventions as well as showcase innovative community-based programs to maintain and promote mental fitness and intervene with adults with cognitive impairment. The emphasis is on illustrating the nuts and bolts of setting up and utilizing cognitive health programs in the community, not just the laboratory.

Book Short Summary:

The Golden Volcano thrusts two Canadian cousins unexpectedly bequeathed a mining claim in the Klondike into the middle of the gold rush, where they encounter disease, disaster, extremes of weather, and human nature twisted by a passion for gold. A deathbed confidence sends the two searching for a fabulous gold-filled volcano on the shore of the Arctic Ocean. But nature, both human and physical, hasn t finished with them, and their story plays out with the nail-biting adventure of an action thriller and the moral and emotional force of high drama. Like many of the works left unpublished when Jules Verne died, The Golden Volcano was altered and edited by his son, Michel. This first translation from the original manuscript allows readers of English to rediscover the pleasures of Verne s storytelling in its original form and to enjoy a virtually unknown gem of action, adventure, and style from a master of French literature.

Book Short Summary:

Basil and Josephine charts the coming of age of two privileged youths from quiet Midwestern towns, Basil Duke Lee and Josephine Perry - based on Fitzgerald himself and a combination of his first love Ginevra King and his wife Zelda. As one struggles to gain the acceptance of his peers and becomes consumed by ambition, the other finds herself obsessed by teenage crushes and has to confront the pitfalls of popularity. Written for the Saturday Evening Post while the author was working on Tender Is the Night, these stories form a realistic and entertaining portrait of two young adults in the 1910s, fascinating both for the autobiographical insights they provide and the timeless satire that Fitzgerald's fiction has become synonymous with.

Can I Keep My Jersey?

Book Short Summary:

He’s been called a journeyman. Even Paul wouldn’t dispute that classification. Regardless, Bill Simmons, ESPN’s “The Sports Guy,” has said of Paul Shirley, “We could finally have an answer to the question ‘What would it be like if one of our friends was an NBA player?” There’s no denying that Paul Shirley is the closest thing pro basketball’s got to Odysseus. In Homeric fashion, he has logged time practically everywhere in the roundball universe, from six NBA cities to pro leagues in Spain and Greece to North America’s pro ball Siberia, the minor leagues. Hell, he’s even played in the real Siberia. And in Can I Keep My Jersey?, Shirley finally puts down roots long enough to deliver one of the great locker-room chronicles of the modern age. With sharp elbows and an even sharper wit, Shirley–whose writings have been described as “wildly entertaining” by The Wall Street Journal–drops hilarious commentary, revealing which teams have the best cheerleaders (he’s spent many a time-out watching them ply their trade), why Christ is rapidly becoming every team’s “sixth man,” and even the best ways to get bloodstains out of your game uniform, using only an ordinary bar of soap and a hotel bathroom sink. From sharing the court with Kobe and Shaq to perusing the food court at some mall in a bush-league burg; from taking pregame layups to getting laid out by a stray knee from an NBA power forward; from hopping a limo to the team’s charter jet to dashing to catch the van home from a B-league game in Tijuana, Shirley dishes on what it’s like to try to make it as a professional athlete. Can I Keep My Jersey? is a rollicking, thoughtful, even thought-provoking insider’s look at a pro baller’s life on the fringe. Like Jim Bouton’s Ball Four or John Feinstein’s A Season on the Brink, Shirley’s odyssey deserves to find a home on every sports fan’s bookshelf.

Book Short Summary:

This biography of Robert Sayers Sheffey weaves the story of a unique-in the true meaning of the word-man, the details of whose life entitle him to the mythical position he holds even today among the people of a part of the South, where, so many years ago, he traveled the circuits of Virginia, West Virginia, and into the fringes of other states as an itinerant preacher. Born in 1820, raised in Virginia, and having spent a part of his early youth in the home of a wealthy Presbyterian uncle and aunt, there was little in his early background to explain Robert Sheffey's call to the Methodist ministry, his unusual conversion, and, against all odds, the eventual acceptance of his unorthodoxy by the hierarchy of his adopted church, and, ultimately, the adoration of an army of followers who came to believe him to be a Divine. Here are documented his extraordinary gifts of exhortation, the depths of his caring about every single soul in the widespread territory he rode-on a brutally rigorous, self-imposed schedule-as well as the unexplainable psyche and prophetic talents that truly earned him the title "Saint of the Wilderness." Mr. Carr's book tells, in detail, of this physically frail, yet incredibly strong man (whose life spanned eighty-two years) and the demons with which he had to wrestle, his personal deprivations and sorrows and triumphs, the beauty of his love for all living things, and the unshakability of his faith and prayer petitions. The Saint of the Wilderness is the authentic, thoroughly researched life of a figure still revered, still talked about throughout the South, and not rarely, in other parts of the world. But such a life example knows no bounds: such love and faith is universal in its appeal to the whole of mankind.

Book Short Summary:

Seventeen-year-old Jacklin maneuvers her way through a summer of family drama and first—and second—loves in this gorgeous, lyrical novel from the author of Friday Never Leaving. Jacklin Bates (a.k.a. “Jack”) believes the only way to soar beyond her life is to drop out of school and move in with her free-spirited sister, Trudy. But Jack quickly discovers her sister isn’t the same person she used to be. And when Jack loses her job and the boy she loves breaks her heart, she becomes desperate for distractions. She strikes up an unlikely friendship with Pope, a lost soul camping in the forest behind her house. And then there’s Jeremiah, the boy next door with a kind, listening ear and plenty of troubles of his own. Together, over an endless summer, Jack and Jeremiah fix up the abandoned drive-in theater at the edge of town. But even as a fragile romance builds between them, Jack knows deep down that she can’t stay in limbo forever. When Jack faces losing Jeremiah, she searches for a way to repair their relationship—beginning with the other broken pieces in her life. Only, sometimes the hardest part of starting over isn’t choosing a path…it’s figuring out how to take that first step forward.

Book Short Summary:

The inspiring, meditative classic autobiography of a pioneering nineteenth-century autodidact and writer, in English for the first time Over the 29 years of his short life, Franz Michael Felder worked with furious productivity to better himself and the lives of those around him. From his humble origins in the Austrian village of Schoppernau, he went on to found workers' cooperatives, a political party and even a public library in his own home, as well as writing many literary works. A Life in the Making is both the culmination of this extraordinary career and a chronicle of its development. It is a story of early hardship and fortitude, of Felder's relentless zeal for learning and his lifelong effort to reconcile his own expanding horizons with the enforced confines of the community he was born to. Unfolding in prose of limpid beauty, A Life in the Making becomes a deeply moving tribute to Felder's wife Nanni, and to his enduring belief in the possibility of a better world.

Book Short Summary:

It is 1943 in Beaumont, Texas, and Barton Barre’s life has just veered from a carefully planned path to fame and fortune. After a drunken night with friends, the recent college graduate is coerced into volunteering for the army. With fate and perhaps the legacy of the La Barre family curse hovering over him, Barton signs on for officers’ training and begins serving in England. It is not long after D-Day when Barton finds himself in France, the same area his father once fought in during the summer of 1918. Intrigued by the contents of an earlier letter from his father, Bart searches to find the truths behind a family mystery. Meanwhile back home in America, the Barre family and Bart’s pen pal, Elise Boulanger, spends their days fretting about him and attempting to survive the hardships of war rationing. Elise is torn by her devotion for Bart—a man she met only once—and a blossoming new romance. She and the Barre family have no idea that as Bart battles loneliness and worry amid the chaos of war, destiny waits to play a cruel joker card. Legends of War is the second book in the La Barre Family Saga—it is a compelling and heartfelt story of fractured families’ lives both at home in America and on the battlefield in Europe during World War II.

Book Short Summary:

See how the soon-to-be-king of radio comedy moved from his vaudeville stand-up comedy background to invent the workplace situation comedy. In these first shows of 1932, Jack plays a “Broadway Romeo,” a genial, self-deprecating comedian, who is not yet the famously cheap “fall guy” he would become over the next two years. Jack claims that it’s his bandleader, George Olsen, who’s the tightwad. Highlights of Volume One include: • Jack’s commercials for Canada Dry Ginger Ale- the funniest, and most controversial, advertising parodies he would ever perform. • Jack’s panic as he realizes he has used up every vaudeville routine he’d ever performed on stage, and this is a twice-a-week program. • The initial Introduction of Mary Livingstone, the radio fan from Plainfield, New Jersey. • An introduction by Kathy Fuller-Seeley that sets the stage for why these historic shows are so important to understand Benny’s career. These 26 hilarious radio scripts offer Jack Benny at his early creative best. Kathryn Fuller-Seeley is the author of Jack Benny and the Golden Age of Radio Comedy (2017) and books on early motion pictures and nickelodeon audiences. She teaches media history at the University of Texas at Austin.

The most up-to-date book on invertebrates, providing a new framework for understanding their place in the tree of life In The Invertebrate Tree of Life, Gonzalo Giribet and Gregory Edgecombe, leading authorities on invertebrate biology and paleontology, utilize phylogenetics to trace the evolution of animals from their origins in the Proterozoic to today. Phylogenetic relationships between and within the major animal groups are based on the latest molecular analyses, which are increasingly genomic in scale and draw on the soundest methods of tree reconstruction. The authors review the systematics, natural history, anatomy, development, and fossil records of all major animal groups, employing seminal historical works and cutting-edge research in evolutionary developmental biology, genomics, and advanced imaging techniques. Overall, they provide a synthetic treatment of all animal phyla and discuss their relationships via an integrative approach to invertebrate systematics, anatomy, paleontology, and genomics.
