Book Short Summary:

From his cult classic television series Twin Peaks to his most recent film Inland Empire (2006), David Lynch is best known for his unorthodox narrative style. An award-winning director, producer, and writer, Lynch distorts and disrupts traditional storylines and offers viewers a surreal, often nightmarish perspective. His unique approach to filmmaking has made his work familiar to critics and audiences worldwide, and he earned Academy Award nominations for Best Director for The Elephant Man (1980), Blue Velvet (1986), and Mulholland Drive (2001). Lynch creates a new reality for both characters and audience by focusing on the individual and embracing existentialism. In The Philosophy of David Lynch, editors William J. Devlin and Shai Biderman have compiled an impressive list of contributors to explore the philosophy at the core of the filmmaker's work. Lynch is examined as a postmodern artist, and the themes of darkness, logic, and time are discussed in depth. Other prominent issues in Lynch's films, such as Bad faith and freedom, ethics, politics, and religion, are also considered. Investigating myriad aspects of Lynch's influential and innovative work, The Philosophy of David Lynch provides a fascinating look at the philosophical underpinnings of the famous cult director.

Book Short Summary:

Three cities, two years, one chance: from the author of the critically acclaimed debut So It Is — shortlisted for best first book at the Scottish Book Awards 2013 — comes the hard-hitting story of a young man determined to find his voice. Plucked from obscurity in Glasgow, Rab Dillon is about to become the next great protest singer. Seduced by promises of stardom, carrying only the guitar given to him by the girl who broke his heart, he travels down to London. There he records the debut album that will speak to the dispossessed, the disenfranchised and disheartened. One year later, he is sleeping rough on the streets of Brighton. A modern-day ballad set across three cities and two years, The Busker is a richly comic exposé of the music industry, the Occupy movement, homelessness, squatting — and failing to live up to the name you (almost) share with your hero. It is also the story of what survives when the flimsy dreams of fame fall apart.

The complete five book series of City Shifters: the Den! Find out if Barrett Kaiser and his rowdy bear brothers survive the bad guys, wreak some vengeance, and find true love! Bearing Burdens: Josie just needs enough money to pay off her loan shark and get custody of her nieces and nephew. But when she saves Kaiser's life, she discovers a whole world of shifters exists in the city -- and her dead sister might have been involved in it. Josie has to decide whether to risk everything she loves to stay with Kaiser, including her own life and humanity, or shoulder her burdens on her own yet again. Bearing Hearts: Lucy Randall couldn't save her partner, Ragnar, when their mission against a rogue wolf-pack went bad, but she can finish the job and at least honor Ragnar's memory by killing the men who ambushed him. Reaching the investigator who hired her seems easy enough -- until she runs into a man with Ragnar's face and twice as much attitude. Can they avenge Ragnar's death and get one step closer to destroying the rogue wolf-pack, or will their hearts grow too heavy to bear? Bearing Scars: Kara flees a rogue pack to save her own life, but knows she has to go back to save her brother. When the rogue wolves chase her, though, Kara faces a lonely death in the woods -- until an enormous bear shifter races in to save her. Owen is everything she needs, and as he deals with his own scars, Kara discovers he needs her more. But when the rogue pack demands a trade that endangers Kara, her brother, and most of the bears, how far will Kara go to save her brother? And how much will Owen sacrifice to protect her? Bearing Demons: Greer O’Brien has seen all kinds of tragedy as a homicide detective, and she’s witnessed her fair share as a banshee, too. When she finds a dying man, the banshee sings his death-song – except the handsome shifter doesn’t stay dead. Greer isn’t ready for Malcolm MacNevin to disrupt her solitary life, and she certainly isn’t ready for him to kidnap her. When Malcolm's little sister disappears into the city's underworld, Greer walks a fine line between her oath as a detective and her growing feelings for Malcolm. She’ll even face off with Russian mobsters, crazy fae overlords, and a rogue pack to save Malcolm’s sister. But will that be enough to save Malcolm from his demons? Bearing Secrets: Sunshine Wilkes runs a shelter and escape route for women with nasty husbands. She handles whatever the world throws at her... until she rescues a crazy pregnant lady raving about werewolves and carrying a little boy with a puppy tail. She's in over her head in a magical world she didn't know existed. So when a detective pal recommends a gorgeous Russian thug as a bodyguard, Sunny doesn't mind at all. She can handle a guy with a dodgy past -- even him being a werebear is something she can come around to. But when her relationship with Sasha makes Sunny the target of an evil wolf pack and Russian mobsters, she starts to think some of his secrets are too dark to survive. Will Sasha's secrets ruin his future with Sunny, or will he finally break free of the past?

Book Short Summary:

From a powerful new voice in fiction comes a compelling debut about the delicate bond between daughters and mothers, and about leaving everything you know in order to find the place where you belong. Adie has always known she was different. There's her size, for one thing. Born three months premature, Adie is the smallest of her peers. Then there's Adie's mother, who at first glance seems like so many other 1980s moms--clipping coupons and attending Feel the Burn aerobics classes. But beneath the surface is something erratic and unpredictable, something that makes her drag Adie and her older sister, Miriam, from one rental apartment to the next--until Miriam runs away. Adie is left behind with her mother, who is convinced their lives are in real danger and takes Adie on a crazy run across northern California. Now Adie faces a stark choice: submit to this increasingly surreal adventure, or grow up in ways she never imagined. . . "Life in Miniature is a stunning double portrait, subtly capturing a daughter's misconceptions of her mother's delusions--while simultaneously revealing the consequences for both--in a compulsively readable and deeply insightful first novel." --Jonathon Keats, author of The Book of the Unknown ". . .a book of intelligence and grace that will make you laugh and cry." --Terry Gamble, author of Good Family Linda Schlossberg received her PhD in English literature from Harvard University, where she is the Assistant Director of the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program. Book Short Summary:

सत्यं परं धीमहि SATYAM PARAM DHIMAHI Part 2 is the culmination of the pastimes of Shri Krishna presented from the 10th Volume of Srimad Bhagavatam (Dasama Skandam). This book is not mere stories about Shri Krishna. Rather, they are the essence of the original scripture. Srimad Bhagavatam is Vedic knowledge and this book attempts to keep the presentation close to the original text. Those interested can use it for further interpretation or discourse in terms of Vedic wisdom or pure devotion. The worthy object and the subject of veneration in the personality of Shri Krishna impelled even the waters of the Ganges, emerging from the pious Lotus feet of Shri Hari, irrelevant. That manifested personality (of Shri Krishna) enabled both friends and enemies to attain his own identity equally without discrimination. Sri Mahalakshmi, for whose favor people worship her, being the Goddess of Affluence, is at the constant service of Shri Krishna devotedly. His pious names are capable of destroying inauspiciousness, even if one listens to them once or pronounces them. The successive uninterrupted flow of the pearls of Vedic wisdom through various sages, as a matter of tradition, commenced from him. Shri Krishna holds the Sudarshana disc representing the flow of eternal time. I consider it as my fortune that I could touch upon DASAMA SKANDAM from Srimad Bhagavatam and present them to the best of my ability. I am sure, those interested in Srimad Bhagavatam will relish the Satyam Param Dhimahi Part 1 and 2.

Why the West Rules - For Now

Book Short Summary:

Why does the West rule? In this magnum opus, eminent Stanford polymath Ian Morris answers this provocative question, drawing on 50,000 years of history, archeology, and the methods of social science, to make sense of when, how, and why the paths of development differed in the East and West — and what this portends for the 21st century. There are two broad schools of thought on why the West rules. Proponents of "Long-Term Lock-In" theories such as Jared Diamond suggest that from time immemorial, some critical factor — geography, climate, or culture perhaps — made East and West unalterably different, and determined that the industrial revolution would happen in the West and push it further ahead of the East. But the East led the West between 500 and 1600, so this development can't have been inevitable; and so proponents of "Short-Term Accident" theories argue that Western rule was a temporary aberration that is now coming to an end, with Japan, China, and India resuming their rightful places on the world stage. However, as the West led for 9,000 of the previous 10,000 years, it wasn't just a temporary aberration. So, if we want to know why the West rules, we need a whole new theory. Ian Morris, boldly entering the turf of Jared Diamond and Niall Ferguson, provides the broader approach that is necessary, combining the textual historian's focus on context, the anthropological archaeologist's awareness of the deep past, and the social scientist's comparative methods to make sense of the past, present, and future — in a way no one has ever done before.

Book Short Summary:

The selection of essays in this volume aims to present Indian philosophy as an autonomous intellectual tradition, with its own internal dynamics, rhythms, techniques, problematics and approaches, and to show how the richness of this tradition has a vital role in a newly emerging global and international discipline of philosophy, one in which a diversity of traditions exchange ideas and grow through their interaction with one another. This new volume is an abridgement of the four-volume set, Indian Philosophy, published by Routledge in 2016. The selection of chapters was made in collaboration with the editors at Routledge. The purpose of this volume is to reintroduce the heritage of ‘Indian Philosophy’ to a contemporary readership by acquainting the reader with some of the core themes of Indian philosophy, such as the concept of philosophy, philosophy as a search for the self, Buddhist philosophy of mind, metaphysics, epistemology, language and logic.

It is the Land of Plenty where the events of the novel take place, but they are presented in such a way that they indicate worldly happenings. These events have the global phenomena of the so-called Modernity and Progress which left humanity far behind while itself proceeding miles and miles ahead. The story of the novel contains the bunch of events that depict Man, Money and Market. Here money symbolizes the Power and Market the progress. Man is the Common Man who is openly harassed and exploited. The events are mostly set on Satire, which is the backbone of the book. Satire makes the theme extraordinarily effective and appealing. By nature Fantasy makes satire more pleasing and convincing. The novel for that matter pasteurizes the fantasy of various forms depicting different anomalies of the progressive world. Besides Satire and Fantasy one more thing to mention. This novel has a touch of Philosophy. The Philosophy that would not bore but add a dimension to the reader’s thinking.

Book Short Summary:

Traditionally, Buddhist philosophy has seemingly rejected the autonomous self. In Western philosophy, free will and the philosophy of action are established areas of research. This book presents a comprehensive analytical review of extant scholarship on perspectives on free will. It studies and refutes the most powerful Western and Buddhist philosophical objections to free will and explores the possibility that a form of agency may in fact exist within Buddhism. Providing a detailed explanation of how Buddhist meditation increases self-regulative mind-control abilities, the author argues that the Buddhist path is designed to produce meditation virtuosos exhibiting mind-control abilities far exceeding the free-will advocate’s ability to ‘do otherwise’ or have their choices be ‘up to’ them. Based on the empirically-supported mind-control cultivated by these meditation virtuosos, the book proposes the principle of, ‘Buddhist Soft Compatibilism’, a theory of ‘freedom of the mind’ that entails freedoms of the will, attention, emotion and action, compatible with both determinism and indeterminism. Buddhism, Meditation and Free Will will be of interest to Buddhist and Western philosophers and academics interested in comparative philosophy, free will, philosophy of action, metaphysics, ethics and Religious Studies.

Such an understanding and the ensuing insights lie in the cusp of philosophy, neurosciences, psychiatry, and medical humanities. In this volume, the editors and contributors explore the foundations of human thinking and being and discuss both evolutionary/cultural embeddedness, and the self-orientation, of consciousness, keeping in mind questions that bring in the interdisciplinary complexity of issues such as the emergence of consciousness, relation between healing and agency, models of altered self, how cognition impacts the social self, experiential primacy as the hallmark of consciousness, and alternate epistemologies to understand these interdisciplinary puzzles.

Book Short Summary:

Ibn al-Arabi’s Fusus al-Hikam is a translation of one of the most important works written on Islamic Mysticism. Muhyi al-Din Ibn al-Arabi (1165-1240) is deemed the greatest mystic of Islam and his mystical philosophy has attracted the attention of both Muslims and non-Muslims from his time to the present day. Believing that the world is the self- manifestation of God, he claimed that all religions are equal and that the perfect human being is he who knows all the religious phenomena in the world. Fusus al-hikam examines the singular characteristics of twenty seven prophets of Islam and constitutes the best summary of Ibn al-Arabi's thought. The translation of these twenty seven chapters is preceded by an introduction that explains the main ideas of Ibn al-Arabi and is accompanied by explanatory notes to the text. Providing an easily accessible translation of one of the greatest mystics of Islam, Ibn al Arabi’ Fusus al-Hikam is essential reading for students, scholars and researchers of Islamic Philosophy, Mysticism and Islamic Mysticism in particular.

Book Short Summary:

This volume is a collective exploration of major themes in the work of Crispin Wright, one of today's leading philosophers. These newly commissioned papers are divided into four sections, preceded by a substantial Introduction, which places them in the context of the development of Wright's ideas. The distinguished contributors address issues such as the rule-following problem, knowledge of our meanings and minds, truth, realism, anti-realism and relativism, as well as the nature of perceptual justification, the cogency of arguments such as G. E. Moore's celebrated proof of an external world, and scepticism about the material world. Some papers explore the relationship of Wright's ideas with those of Ludwig Wittgenstein, whose influence has always been a prominent aspect of Wright's philosophy. The essays collectively testify to the enormous interest and relevance of Wright's seminal contributions for present-day debates in areas as diverse as the philosophy of language and mind, metaphysics, and epistemology, and significantly advance research in these areas. The volume also contains Wright's substantial responses to his critics, which offer the most up-to-date versions of his ideas and a vigorous defence of his philosophy.

Book Short Summary:

Games, Norms, and Reasons: Logic at the Crossroads provides an overview of modern logic focusing on its relationships with other disciplines, including new interfaces with rational choice theory, epistemology, game theory and informatics. This book continues a series called "Logic at the Crossroads" whose title reflects a view that the deep insights from the classical phase of mathematical logic can form a harmonious mixture with a new, more ambitious research agenda of understanding and enhancing human reasoning and intelligent interaction. The editors have gathered together articles from active authors in this new area that explore dynamic logical aspects of norms, reasons, preferences and beliefs in human agency, human interaction and groups. The book pays a special tribute to Professor Rohit Parikh, a pioneer in this movement.

Book Short Summary:

Things are quiet on the demon hunting front. Maybe a little too quiet for Cerise. No demonic possessions, no otherworldly intrusions. Johnny even has time to learn a new yo-yo trick. Cerise is edgy, though. No news is not necessarily good news in their line of work. And then Lucifer appears in Johnny’s living room. Something is not right in the heavenly- and other- realms. Over a nice cup of tea, Lucifer tells them he has had a message delivered from God accusing him of being responsible for the disappearance of Gabriel and Michael, the archangels. He says he is not to blame, but that he has become aware of a shifting in the balance between Dark and Light, and he fears someone, or something, is trying to upset that balance in favor of chaos. If that happens, no one- Heaven, Hell, Earth, and everything in between could be in danger. Johnny agrees to help Lucifer try to sort it out. He checks with his demonic informant who is reluctant to tell him much but does leave them with a cryptic riddle. A riddle that scares Lucifer even more. While doing a bit of research on the few clues they do have, they are attacked, and Lucifer is devilnapped by a larger than life serpent. He manages to leave Johnny with a way to track him and get to the heart of the mystery. The trail leads them to an ancient cave, a wolf, and the real Serpent who plots revenge on all those it feels wronged it. Johnny and Cerise need to defeat the Serpent and rescue the captive angels before it can unleash untold evil and the ultimate destruction of pretty much everything.

Book Short Summary:

The Hugo and Nebula Award–winning novel from the New York Times–bestselling author of The Moon and the Sun. On an Earth scarred by nuclear war, Snake harnesses the power of venom to cure illnesses and vaccinate against disease. The healer can even ease patients into death with the power of her dreamsnake. But she is not respected and trusted by all, and when she tries to help a sick nomad child, the frightened clan kills her dreamsnake. Ashamed of being misjudged and grieving the loss of her dreamsnake, Snake has one choice to maintain her livelihood: she must travel to the city, which jealously guards its knowledge. And before she faces the prejudices and arrogance of the people there, Snake must make her way across a barren desert, surviving storms and radiation poisoning, helping those she can—all while a madman stalks her every move . . . “[Dreamsnake] is filled with scenes as suspenseful as anyone could wish . . . but most of all it addresses the humanity in all of us.” —The Seattle Times “A haunting, rich, and tender novel that explores the human side of science fiction in a manner that’s all too uncommon.” —Robert Silverberg “A splendid tale, combining the sensitivity and attention to mood of the new generation of SF writers with a gripping and well-worked-out adventure . . . The novel is rich in character, background and incident—unusually absorbing and moving.” —Publishers Weekly “Instead of kicking butt, the lead character is dedicated to saving lives. . . . Snake’s blighted world is expertly drawn, and her encounters with dysfunctional societies can be bracing and challenging reading.” —The Guardian “This is an exciting future-dream with real characters, a believable mythos and, what’s more important, an excellent, readable story.” —Frank Herbert, author of the Dune series

Book Short Summary:

A comprehensive autobiographical account of the transforming experiences possible with ayahuasca • Reveals the protocols of a traditional ayahuasca retreat and the importance of its ritual diet, isolation, and sacred songs • Relates an extensive personal account of the traditional indigenous use of ayahuasca for healing and revelation Ayahuasca: The Visionary and Healing Powers of the Vine of the Soul is an autobiographical account of the author’s work with ayahuasca, a potent and sacred plant brew of the Amazon region that is known for its extraordinary visionary and healing powers. As she learned from her experience, with the help of ayahuasca we are able to grasp our paradoxical nature, the first step to acceptance of ourselves in both our glorious and dark aspects. Ayahuasca teaches us how to release the illusions we hold about ourselves and makes it possible to integrate our many diverse aspects to acquire our true power. This book reveals the ritual protocols that must be followed prior to partaking of ayahuasca, including the traditional preparatory “diet”--which requires enduring austere conditions, isolation, and only small amounts of bland food before receiving the powers of the plant spirit from an ayahuasquero, a healing master--and the sacred songs, icaros, that are sung when imbibing the substance. Although the use of ayahuasca is growing among “underground” spiritual seekers and through the burgeoning ayahuasca tourism trade in South America, few of its seekers understand how it is used traditionally and the importance of the rituals the indigenous people follow. With this book, the author hopes to restore the importance of these indigenous practices so that we may truly understand all the gifts of ayahuasca.
