Book Excerpt :

In the magical time between night and day, when both the sun and the moon are in the sky, a child is born in a little blue house on a hill. And Miu Lan is not just any child, but one who can change into any shape they can imagine. The only problem is they can't decide what to be: A boy or a girl? A bird or a fish? A flower or a shooting star? At school, though, they must endure inquisitive looks and difficult questions from the other children, and they have trouble finding friends who will accept them for who they are. But they find comfort in the loving arms of their mother, who always offers them the same loving refrain: "whatever you dream of / i believe you can be / from the stars in the sky to the fish in the sea." In this captivating, beautifully imagined picture book about gender, identity, and the acceptance of the differences between us, Miu Lan faces many questions about who they are and who they may be. But one thing's for sure: no matter what this child becomes, their mother will love them just the same. Kai Cheng Thom is a writer, performance artist, and psychotherapist in Toronto. Her first poetry book, a Place Called No Homeland, was published in 2017. Kai Yun Ching is a community-based organizer, educator, and illustrator in Montreal. Book Short Summary:

Our encounters with the physical world are filled with miraculous puzzles-wind appears from somewhere, heavy objects (like oil tankers) float on oceans, yet smaller objects go to the bottom of our water-filled buckets. As adults, instead of confronting a whole world, we are reduced to driving from one parking garage to another. The Child's Conception of Physical Causality, part of the very beginning of the ground-breaking work of the Swiss naturalist Jean Piaget, is filled with creative experimental ideas for probing the most sophisticated ways of thinking in children. The strength of Piaget's research is evident in this collection of empirical data, systematically organized by tasks that illuminate how things work. Piaget's data are remarkably rich. In his new introduction, Jaan Valsiner observes that Piaget had no grand theoretical aims, yet the book's simple power cannot be ignored. Piaget's great contribution to developmental psychology was his "clinical method"-a tactic that integrated relevant aspects of naturalistic experiment, interview, and observation. Through this systematic inquiry, we gain insight into children's thinking. Reading Piaget will encourage the contemporary reader to think about the unity of psychological phenomena and their theoretical underpinnings. His wealth of creative experimental ideas probes into the most sophisticated ways of thinking in children. Technologies change, yet the creative curiosity of children remains basically unhindered by the consumer society. Piaget's data preserve the reality of the original phenomena. As such, this work will provide a wealth of information for developmental psychologists and those involved in the field of experimental science. Jean Piaget (1896-1980) is known for investigations of thought processes. He was professor at Geneva University (1929-1954) and director of the International Center for Epistemology (1955-1980). He is the author of The Language and Thought of the Child, Judgment and Reasoning in the Child, The Origin of Intelligence in Children, and The Early Growth of Logic in the Child. Jaan Valsiner is professor of psychology at Clark University, and a recognized authority on the life and work of Piaget.

The Intellectual Lives of Children

Book Short Summary:

A look inside the minds of young children shows how we can better nurture their abilities to think and grow. Adults easily recognize children’s imagination at work as they play. Yet most of us know little about what really goes on inside their heads as they encounter the problems and complexities of the world around them. In The Intellectual Lives of Children, Susan Engel brings together an extraordinary body of research to explain how toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary-aged children think. By understanding the science behind how children observe their world, explain new phenomena, and solve problems, parents and teachers will be better equipped to guide the next generation to become perceptive and insightful thinkers. The activities that engross kids can seem frivolous, but they can teach us a great deal about cognitive development. A young girl’s bug collection reveals important lessons about how children ask questions and organize information. Watching a young boy scoop mud can illuminate the process of invention. When a child ponders the mystery of death, we witness how children build ideas. But adults shouldn’t just stand around watching. When parents are creative, it can rub off on their children. Engel shows how parents and teachers can stimulate children’s curiosity by presenting them with mysteries to solve. Unfortunately, in our homes and schools, we too often train children to behave rather than nurture their rich and active minds. This focus is misguided, since it is with their first inquiries and inventions—and the adult world’s response to them—that children lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning and good thinking. Engel offers readers a scientifically based approach that will encourage children’s intellectual growth and set them on the path of inquiry, invention, and ideas.

Book Short Summary:

The bestselling author of the groundbreaking novels Under Heaven and River of Stars evokes a world inspired by the conflicts and dramas of Renaissance Europe. Against this tumultuous backdrop the lives of men and women unfold on the borderlands--where empires and faiths collide. From the small coastal town of Senjan, notorious for its pirates, a young woman sets out to find vengeance for her lost family. That same spring, from the wealthy city-state of Seressa, famous for its canals and lagoon, come two very different people: a young artist travelling to the dangerous east to paint the grand khalif at his request--and possibly to do more--and a fiercely intelligent, angry woman, posing as a doctor's wife, but sent by Seressa as a spy. The trading ship that carries them is commanded by the accomplished younger son of a merchant family, ambivalent about the life he's been born to live. And further east, a boy trains to become a soldier in the elite infantry of the khalif--to win glory in the war everyone knows is coming. As these lives entwine, their fates--and those of many others--will hang in the balance, when the khalif sends his massive army to take the great fortress that is the gateway to the western world...

Book Short Summary:

This book, I pray, expresses that the suffering a child endures because of a traumatic childhood does not have to be the determining factor in deciding the outcome of our lives. The kind of life trauma a child or anyone goes through should not, in any way, determine their ability to overcome these traumas and have a productive adult life. It is my belief that with a great Creator, God, and his divine intervention in our lives, we, as his children, will be carried through life’s traumatic experiences. It is my belief that I and all of humankind were created for a great purpose. The writing of this book, or its purpose, is not to gather sympathy, but the opposite, to explain that an individual does not have to allow their childhood or economic environment to set the standard for the rest of their lives. In my childhood, I attempted to subconsciously close myself off, mentally or emotionally, from what was occurring. This denial allowed me a way of surviving through early life. I called out to God, the great Creator, for help and guidance many times. Without the help and the great love of God, these traumas would probably have killed me from the shock. From an early age and throughout my adult life, I’ve had to find ways to deal with my traumatic past. With God and a drifter named Mr. Gabe who showed up at all the right times like a guardian angel who seemed to know a lot about the same God my grandmother talked about, I did survive throughout these traumas and have lived a relatively good life and achieved challenges that could only have been possible with God’s love.

Book Short Summary:

Picking up and pulling at the vibrant threads of Robert Priest’s last book of poems, Reading the Bible Backward, this collection explores new themes while spanning multiple strands of thought. One strand leads, with unabashed candor and elegance, through the author’s love life; another, through fields of praise; a third experiments with automated metaphors and delivers a challenging new selection of mash-ups that Priest calls meme splices. A fourth thread rekindles the author’s love of the prose poem to produce a suite of strange tales, bizarre playlets, and phonetic modifications. With flair and daring, Previously Feared Darkness consorts with forms and subject matter to present the work of a master getting deep, nasty, and hilarious with the best of them.

Book Short Summary:

Six Ensemble Plays for Young Actors is an anthology of work written for actors aged 11-25. Ideal for youth theatre groups, schools and amateur dramatic companies, it contains a diverse selection of plays suited to large casts and ensemble performance. Varying in style and subject matter, the plays offer performers, directors and designers a range of exciting challenges: from recreating the mythological world of The Odyssey to a dramatisation of two hundred years of slavery that will take the audience on a journey from eighteenth century Africa to 1990s London in Sweetpeter. Contemporary urban living is confronted in plays ranging from the starkly realistic to the playful, lyrical and surrealistic. From the innocent and imaginative world of a school playground to issues of racism, peer pressure, crime and communication in a mobile phone obsessed culture, this is a wide-ranging anthology that will enrich the repertoire of youth theatre groups and the curriculum in schools. The volume is introduced by Paul Roseby, artistic director of the National Youth Theatre.

This memoir is an interesting blend of history and fantasy, of reality and poetry, of high-mindedness with the occasional carnality thrown in...I feel as though - not just for the fact of the words, but also for the ebb and flow of thought direction - I have been wandering the nerve-endings of your brain. Your history is there, certainly, but slathered with other gravies: poetry, philosophy, passion, and dispassion. And a great deal of playfulness. I believe there is something very Zen-'Masterish' about the angled prose you set down in this writing, a wild-and-crazy trip, man. While I was reading your history with 'C' (cosmos), I was reminded of these lines that Rumi wrote sometime in the mid-1200s: I would love to kiss you (The price of kissing is my life) Now my loving is running toward my life Shouting, "What a bargain, Let's buy it!" - Dennis O'Keefe, American Poet

Book Short Summary:

From the creators of the critically acclaimed The Night Gardener and Ocean Meets Sky comes a whimsical and elegantly illustrated picture book about community, art, the importance of giving back—and the wonder that fell from the sky. It fell from the sky on a Thursday. None of the insects know where it came from, or what it is. Some say it’s an egg. Others, a gumdrop. But whatever it is, it fell near Spider’s house, so he’s convinced it belongs to him. Spider builds a wondrous display so that insects from far and wide can come look at the marvel. Spider has their best interests at heart. So what if he has to charge a small fee? So what if the lines are long? So what if no one can even see the wonder anymore? But what will Spider do after everyone stops showing up?

Book Short Summary:

FOREWORD Feeling elated to present voracious poetry lovers all over the world ‘IN THE ART GALLERY OF MY HEART’, my English trans-version of choicest Hindi and Rajasthani poems of literary icon Late Sh. Sanwar Daiya Ji, a reputed poet and translator of Rajasthani and Hindi. He was awarded by Sahitya Akademi, Delhi for his “Ek Duniya Mahri” in 1985. He was awarded with Ganeshilal Vyas ‘Ustad’ Padhya Puraskar and Dr. L P Tessitory Gadhya Puruskar. Sanwar Ji’s poetry has an innate depth . His poems emerge from heart, hence, stir the chords of heart of the reader spontaneously. His poems speak about nature, love, relations and realities of life. His poems cover all the hues of spectrum. The poems delve on multifarious themes. Rooted deep in his native soil, he deals with the ordinariness of life. His poetry discusses the turmoil and turbulence of life, but never leaves optimism. This establishes him as a poet of balanced stance. His poems are enriched with lofty thoughts, deep perceptions, sensibility, simplicity and straightforwardness. He retains the equipoise of a prophet or a seer. This English Version of his selected poetry offers a variety of emotions as his poetic world is not confined to any particular theme. His poems are an expression of a human being with a deep will to survive and invokes others to struggle for betterment and for building a new society. His poems have a philosophical tinge and invoke readers to link themselves with nature and petty joys of life. Dr. Neeraj Daiya, worthy son of Sanwar Daiya Ji, intended to get released this book on Birth Anniversary of his Respected father. Last week, Neeraj Ji conveyed his wish to me regarding getting translated by me, poems of Late Sanwar Daiya Ji and I promised him to put my best efforts to finish the translation project in stipulated time. I feel exulted that I could complete this translation project in 5 days only, by Grace of God. I am equally obliged to Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, publisher India Netbooks for consenting to publish it in such a short time. It is my twelfth book continually from his esteemed Publishing-house. I have put my best efforts to retain fervour of original poems of Rajasthani and Hindi. It will give me immense satisfaction if these translated poems of mine cross linguistic and geographical barriers and get translated further in other regional as well as International languages. Book Short Summary:

This volume explores the integration of recent research on everyday, classroom, and professional scientific thinking. It brings together an international group of researchers to present core findings from each context; discuss connections between contexts, and explore structures; technologies, and environments to facilitate the development and practice of scientific thinking. The chapters focus on: * situations from young children visiting museums, * middle-school students collaborating in classrooms, * undergraduates learning about research methods, and * professional scientists engaged in cutting-edge research. A diverse set of approaches are represented, including sociocultural description of situated cognition, cognitive enthnography, educational design experiments, laboratory studies, and artificial intelligence. This unique mix of work from the three contexts deepens our understanding of each subfield while at the same time broadening our understanding of how each subfield articulates with broader issues of scientific thinking. To provide a common focus for exploring connections between everyday, instructional, and professional scientific thinking, the book uses a "practical implications" subtheme. In particular, each chapter has direct implications for the design of learning environments to facilitate scientific thinking.

Book Short Summary:

Moving upstream on the Irrawaddy broad tide, the ocean liner approaches the city of Rangoon, and the gold-leafed pinnacle of the celebrated Shwe Dagon pagoda welcomes it as it rises magnificently in the morning sunlight. The traveler is intrigued with the claim that this ancient shrine has been standing for three thousand years. This injects an anachronism, since Buddhism was founded not more than twenty-five centuries ago and something less than that for its lodgment in Burma. But no one seems to be embarrassed nor stultified by what, for them, is merely a slight chronological inaccuracy, which derives from the time-clocked occidental measurements, for theirs is that timeless eternity of the East.
