Book Excerpt :

Book Short Summary:

Australian and New Zealand crime and thriller writing - collectively referred to as Southern Cross Crime - is booming globally, with antipodean authors regularly featuring on awards and bestseller lists, such as Eleanor Catton's Booker Prize winning The Luminaries and Jane Harper's big commercial hit, The Dry, winner of the CWA Gold Dagger Award. Hailing from two sparsely populated nations on the far edge of the former Empire - neighbours that are siblings in spirit, vastly different in landscape - Australian and New Zealand crime writers offer readers a blend of exotic and familiar, seasoned by distinctive senses of place, outlook, and humour, and roots that trace to the earliest days of our genre. Southern Cross Crime is the first comprehensive guide to modern crime writing from "Down Under". From coastal cities to the outback, leading critic Craig Sisterson showcases key titles from over 250 storytellers, plus screen dramas ranging from Mystery Road to Top of the Lake. Fascinating insights are added through in-depth interviews with some of the prime suspects who paved the way or instigated the global boom, including Michael Robotham, Paul Cleave, Emma Viskic, Paul Thomas, Candice Fox, and Garry Disher. 'Southern Cross Crime is informative, knowledgeable, wide ranging. If you have any ideas about writing a crime novel you need to read it, if you enjoy reading crime novels, you need to read it, if you simply love reading, you need to read it. This is not a dry as dust tome - the writer's encyclopaedic knowledge is carried lightly... a box of the finest literary chocolates' - Renée Taylor, 2018 recipient of the Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement in Fiction 'A valuable and illuminative resource for crime fiction fans everywhere' - Book'd Out

Book Short Summary:

The perfect gift for music lovers and Elvis Costello fans, telling the story behind Elvis Costello’s legendary career and his iconic, beloved songs. Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink provides readers with a master’s catalogue of a lifetime of great music. Costello reveals the process behind writing and recording legendary albums like My Aim Is True, This Year’s Model, Armed Forces, Almost Blue, Imperial Bedroom, and King of America. He tells the detailed stories, experiences, and emotions behind such beloved songs as “Alison,” “Accidents Will Happen,” “Watching the Detectives,” “Oliver’s Army,” “Welcome to the Working Week,” “Radio Radio,” “Shipbuilding,” and “Veronica,” the last of which is one of a number of songs revealed to connect to the lives of the previous generations of his family. Costello chronicles his musical apprenticeship, a child's view of his father Ross MacManus' career on radio and in the dancehall; his own initial almost comical steps in folk clubs and cellar dive before his first sessions for Stiff Record, the formation of the Attractions, and his frenetic and ultimately notorious third U.S. tour. He takes readers behind the scenes of Top of the Pops and Saturday Night Live, and his own show, Spectacle, on which he hosted artists such as Lou Reed, Elton John, Levon Helm, Jesse Winchester, Bruce Springsteen, and President Bill Clinton. The idiosyncratic memoir of a singular man, Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink is destined to be a classic.

Breaking the Rocking Horse

  • Book Code : N.a
  • Total of Pages : 164
  • Category : Religion
  • Members : 260
  • Pdf File: breaking-the-rocking-horse.pdf

Book Short Summary:

“Breaking the Rocking Horse” is a summation of some of the key points found in Marty’s larger works defending the biblical doctrine of unconditional security (more popularly known as eternal security). The present book is a pictorial abridgement that demonstrates that the spiritual fruits produced by professing believers cannot be made the criterion by which to determine (or undermine) the genuineness of their profession. In short, the way one lives does not prove if one is saved. Proveitists is a coined term used within the book to describe the opposing theology of those who allege that the way professing believers live proves whether or not they are saved. The purpose of this book is to disprove proveitism. The notion that heaven is free initially but ultimately costly (in terms of necessary spiritual fruits) is shown to be an irrational back-and-forth rocking between irreconcilable propositions. God-enabled perseverance cannot be the requirement for a salvation that is not contingent upon human performance. Primary chapters within the book focus on the parable of the soils and the parable of the servants. The thesis of these chapters is that carnal believers (pictured by the second and third soils) are cast into the outer darkness (representing loss of rewards) rather than into hell. Assurance of salvation from hell, therefore, is not found in one’s performance, but in Christ alone. The primary benefit of this book to the reader is to encourage a biblically accurate understanding of the gospel so that the reader may not be deceived unwittingly into seeking salvation from eternal damnation by an unbiblical means. Salvation from hell must be received as a free gift by grace apart from works. Logical inconsistency in this area can be highly detrimental. As an additional benefit, the reader is provided solid grounds for biblical assurance without being given grounds for sinful license.

It came in the dead of night—a rhythmic creaking sound that only the children could hear. Jackie and Johnny tried not to listen. But it called to them, whispering of evil, luring them into the darkness of the attic. With its brightly colored saddle and painted-on eyes, it was the most beautiful rocking horse Jackie and Johnny had ever seen. But as they took turns riding it, they didn’t see its tail twitch or its lips curve into a terrifying grin. They couldn’t hear the faint whicker that echoed among the shadows. They couldn’t know that their own innocent eyes had taken on a strange new gleam . . .

Book Short Summary:

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE • A searing, post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son's fight to survive, this "tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy's stature as a living master. It's gripping, frightening and, ultimately, beautiful" (San Francisco Chronicle). A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other. The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world entire," are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

Book Short Summary:

Each beautifully told story in this fine collection resonates with a moving depth of emotional understanding. Having won prizes in major national competitions for four of these stories, had several selected for anthologies of significant New Zealand writing, with numerous broadcast on radio and one even translated into Mandarin, Carl Nixon was long overdue for a book of his own, collecting his stories together. So, here they are. Stories that evoke the South Island landscape as well as the New Zealand urban expanse. Stories that take surprising turns as they explore such things as 'saving' a pet parrot, a fruiterer's true love, a return to Crete, an anticipated seduction and the dreams of a suburban mercenary. There are characters to charm and alarm the reader, characters that are startlingly different and characters that are just like us. There are songs of love and tales of loss, there's humour and there's poignancy.

Book Short Summary:

A seminal work and examination of the psychopathology of journalism. Using a strange and unprecedented lawsuit as her larger-than-life example -- the lawsuit of Jeffrey MacDonald, a convicted murderer, against Joe McGinniss, the author of Fatal Vision, a book about the crime -- she delves into the always uneasy, sometimes tragic relationship that exists between journalist and subject. In Malcolm's view, neither journalist nor subject can avoid the moral impasse that is built into the journalistic situation. When the text first appeared, as a two-part article in The New Yorker, its thesis seemed so radical and its irony so pitiless that journalists across the country reacted as if stung. Her book is a work of journalism as well as an essay on journalism: it at once exemplifies and dissects its subject. In her interviews with the leading and subsidiary characters in the MacDonald-McGinniss case -- the principals, their lawyers, the members of the jury, and the various persons who testified as expert witnesses at the trial -- Malcolm is always aware of herself as a player in a game that, as she points out, she cannot lose. The journalist-subject encounter has always troubled journalists, but never before has it been looked at so unflinchingly and so ruefully. Hovering over the narrative -- and always on the edge of the reader's consciousness -- is the MacDonald murder case itself, which imparts to the book an atmosphere of anxiety and uncanniness. The Journalist and the Murderer derives from and reflects many of the dominant intellectual concerns of our time, and it will have a particular appeal for those who cherish the odd, the off-center, and the unsolved.

Stanley Johnson: one-time spy, politician, animal rights crusader - and irresistibly brilliant raconteur. From his career as a Member of the European Parliament to his pioneering work saving the rainforests, Stanley Johnson's life has roamed many avenues. Amongst much else, he has served on the staff of the World Bank and the European Commission, penned dozens of books, appeared on many popular television shows and won awards for his environmental campaigning, besides fathering six children, including the current Mayor of London. This second volume of rip-roaring and hilarious recollections from the man himself begins with him falling out of a tree on his fortieth birthday, then picks up where its acclaimed predecessor, Stanley, I Presume, left off. Along the way, we're treated to the sights of Stanley posing as a burglar, horrifying Margaret Thatcher with his cocktail party repartee, climbing Kilimanjaro (twice) and navigating the turbulent rapids of parenthood. Riotous and illuminating, Stanley, I Resume paints a vivid portrait of a politician, poet and adventurer, an idealist, a family man and - above all - a born storyteller.

Book Short Summary:

Author Erika C. Stevenson was just six years old when, after World War II, soldiers expelled more than three million Sudeten Germans from their ancestral homes in the Sudetenlands of Czechoslovakia. In Fighting for Road Apples, she tells the story of how she was indelibly marked for life as a refugee. In this memoir, she discusses her experiences in bomb shelters; with ethnic cleansing; of enduring a cruel separation from her mother; and of being contained in a stinking boxcar for livestock, condemned for expulsion from her homeland in Bohemia. Intertwined with her familys heritagemarked by misfortunes and struggles of survivalshe narrates the stories of the turbulent, blighted-by-poverty postwar years in Germany. Stevenson describes blithe anecdotes of teen adventures and of falling in love with a foreign student who harbored a few secrets. She also recounts her fathers compelling escape from a British POW camp after D-Day and his later incarceration in a notorious Czech concentration camp. A story of challenges and triumphs, Fighting for Road Apples narrates the true story of what ordinary people endured during an extraordinary time.

Book Short Summary:

A hundred years ago, the most famous athlete in America was a horse. But Dan Patch was more than a sports star; he was a cultural icon in the days before the automobile. Born crippled and unable to stand, he was nearly euthanized. For a while, he pulled the grocer's wagon in his hometown of Oxford, Indiana. But when he was entered in a race at the county fair, he won -- and he kept on winning. Harness racing was the top sport in America at the time, and Dan, a pacer, set the world record for the mile. He eventually lowered the mark by four seconds, an unheard-of achievement that would not be surpassed for decades. America loved Dan Patch, who, though kind and gentle, seemed to understand that he was a superstar: he acknowledged applause from the grandstands with a nod or two of his majestic head and stopped as if to pose when he saw a camera. He became the first celebrity sports endorser; his name appeared on breakfast cereals, washing machines, cigars, razors, and sleds. At a time when the highest-paid baseball player, Ty Cobb, was making $12,000 a year, Dan Patch was earning over a million dollars. But even then horse racing attracted hustlers, cheats, and touts. Drivers and owners bet heavily on races, which were often fixed; horses were drugged with whiskey or cocaine, or switched off with "ringers." Although Dan never lost a race, some of his races were rigged so that large sums of money could change hands. Dan's original owner was intimidated into selling him, and America's favorite horse spent the second half of his career touring the country in a plush private railroad car and putting on speed shows for crowds that sometimes exceeded 100,000 people. But the automobile cooled America's romance with the horse, and by the time he died in 1916, Dan was all but forgotten. His last owner, a Minnesota entrepreneur gone bankrupt, buried him in an unmarked grave. His achievements have faded, but throughout the years, a faithful few kept alive the legend of Dan Patch, and in Crazy Good, Charles Leerhsen travels through their world to bring back to life this fascinating story of triumph and treachery in small-town America and big-city racetracks.

Book Short Summary:

DAD’S BEST MEMORIES AND RECOLLECTIONS is Chazzz Humber’s epithaph casting a very long and sentimental shadow across North America and beyond. This 230-page volume is his granite monument, well-polished! It lavishly records 125 of his best memories over a life-span of nearly eighty years. The vignettes are serenaded with more than 400 illustrations. Those discovering this volume likely will find themselves wanting to record, in their own sunset years, their personal memories and recollections. And when they do, they are apt to recall what it was like to live in their fluctuating world dominated by a variety of personalities and cascading events. Mr. Humber vividly describes what it was like, in 1945, to travel in a 1930 Model A Ford from Toronto to Boston. With lively enthusiasm, he reports what it was like to live in post-World War II Boston, to cook a lobster for a former President of the United States or to sell a pair of elevator shoes to one of Hollywood’s shortest celebrities or to shine the shoes of a Derby-hatted father of a future President of the United States. It is not a remarkable achievement to reflect, to recall or to have memories that are treasured. But to tell them with literary aplomb, to recall the events that happened nearly seventy-five years ago with utmost clarity is definitely an admirable achievement and should be cherished not only by the kin who follow Mr. Humber but by those who might like to imitate what he has monumentally achieved in Dad’s Best Memories and Recollections.

Book Short Summary:

Book Short Summary:

A New York Times Editors’ Choice: “A mind-bending romp through a gender-fluid, eighteenth century London . . . a joyous mash-up of literary genres shot through with queer theory and awash in sex, crime, and revolution.” NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New Yorker • HuffPost • Kirkus Reviews • Finalist for the Lambda Literary Award • Shortlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize • “A dazzling tale of queer romance and resistance.”—Time Jack Sheppard and Edgeworth Bess were the most notorious thieves, jailbreakers, and lovers of eighteenth-century London. Yet no one knows the true story; their confessions have never been found. Until now. Reeling from heartbreak, a scholar named Dr. Voth discovers a long-lost manuscript—a gender-defying exposé of Jack and Bess’s adventures. Is Confessions of the Fox an authentic autobiography or a hoax? As Dr. Voth is drawn deeper into Jack and Bess’s tale of underworld resistance and gender transformation, it becomes clear that their fates are intertwined—and only a miracle will save them all. Writing with the narrative mastery of Sarah Waters and the playful imagination of Nabokov, Jordy Rosenberg is an audacious storyteller of extraordinary talent. Praise for Confessions of the Fox “A cunning metafiction of vulpine versatility . . . an action-adventure tale with postmodern flourishes; an academic comedy spliced with period erotica; an intimate meditation on belonging.”—Katy Waldman, The New Yorker “Confessions of the Fox is so goddamned good. Reading it was like an out-of-body experience. I want to run through the streets screaming about it. It should be in the personal canon of every queer and non-cis person. Read it.”—Carmen Maria Machado, National Book Award finalist for Her Body and Other Parties “A hat tip to Moby-Dick . . . a running footnote hall of mirrors to rival Borges . . . one of the most trenchant calls for progressive action that I have read in a very long time.”—The New York Times Book Review “An ambitious work of metafiction, a sexy queer love story . . . a bold first novel.”—Entertainment Weekly
