Book Excerpt :

From bestselling author Gary Krist, a vibrant and immersive account of New Orleans’ other civil war, at a time when commercialized vice, jazz culture, and endemic crime defined the battlegrounds of the Crescent City Empire of Sin re-creates the remarkable story of New Orleans’ thirty-years war against itself, pitting the city’s elite “better half” against its powerful and long-entrenched underworld of vice, perversity, and crime. This early-20th-century battle centers on one man: Tom Anderson, the undisputed czar of the city's Storyville vice district, who fights desperately to keep his empire intact as it faces onslaughts from all sides. Surrounding him are the stories of flamboyant prostitutes, crusading moral reformers, dissolute jazzmen, ruthless Mafiosi, venal politicians, and one extremely violent serial killer, all battling for primacy in a wild and wicked city unlike any other in the world.

Book Short Summary:

Bioethics, Law, and Human Life Issues: A Catholic Perspective on Marriage, Family, Contraception, Abortion, Reproductive Technology, and Death and Dying draws on the Magisterial teaching of the Catholic Church to outline a Catholic response to a host of controversial issues related to human life. Scarnecchia lays out a Catholic moral theology based on the writings of Pope John Paul II and Thomas Aquinas, and he then applies those Christian moral principles to today's most contentious ethical issues, including reproductive technology, embryo adoption, contraception, abortion, family and same-sex marriage, and euthanasia and assisted suicide. This review of Catholic moral principles brings together an in-depth consideration of the central human life issues of our day with abundant reference to the Church's social teaching and to contrasting positions of today's leading ethicists.

Book Short Summary:

This book re-assesses director Jean Renoir’s work between his departure from France in 1940 and his death in 1979, and contributes to the debate over how the medium of film registers the impact of trauma. The 1930s ended in catastrophe for both for Renoir and for France: La Règle du jeu was a critical and commercial disaster on its release in July 1939 and in 1940 France was occupied by Germany. Even so, Renoir continued to innovate and experiment with his post-war work, yet the thirteen films he made between 1941 and 1969, constituting nearly half of his work in sound cinema, have been sorely neglected in the study of his work. With detailed readings of the these films and four novels produced by Renoir in his last four decades, Davis explores the direct and indirect ways in which film, and Renoir’s films in particular, depict the aftermath of violence.

Book Short Summary:

This text is unique; it is the first book of its kind that challenges the theory of evolution by the word of God. In the text, it will be proved beyond doubt that the word of God is powerful with a two-edged sword. It divides asunder and exposes the counterfeit and the false. Not only that, but it proves the validity of the arguments by using medical and surgical studies of the patients’ ailments. The author is a scientist and a surgeon. He studied anatomy and embryology in full details that makes him argue with confidence. The doctrine of creation has a solid foundation which is the true word of God. The author used the results of surgical procedures that are done by spiritual knowledge compared to others done by natural man, whose knowledge is based on the theory of evolution. These have changed the procedures from difficult and complicated, to a single day procedure with financial gains to the patient and to the public. The relation between sin, diseases, and death is studied and proved beyond doubt. The salvation by justification, sanctification, and righteousness is explained and also proved beyond doubt. Man is created and evolved to a higher degree of holiness by the working power of the Holy Spirit, contrary to evolution by genetic mutation and natural selection that might promote the man to a high intellectual standard, but this usually brings low moral value with it, that at the end lead to death from moral decay, alcoholism, and drug addiction. The evolution is produced by knowledge and experience, and it caries with it, away from God, all the destructive elements to humans.

Book Short Summary:

Will Israel and the U.S. be destroyed or partially destroyed in 2012-2019 or 2026-2030 and beyond and Muslims, Catholics and communism take over most of the world? Were there strange things going around the sun, the moon changing degrees and phases, stars that aren't where there suppose to be and the magnetic poles changing mostly reported secretly in 2001-2011? Did NASA or scientists and astronomers brush the pictures of them away so not to scare people? Did the Bible Code predict strange behavior of the moon in 2011? Will a great tidal wave hit the U.S. East Coast in 2012-2019 and Yellowstone Park super volcano erupt or a comet or asteroid hits the earth or Ocean in 2026-2030 and utterly destroy the entire United States if it still around after the war of 2012-2019? Will the Muslims, communism and Catholics persecute Christians, Americans and Jews all over the world bringing them before Kings and have them sent to prisons and torture and killed if they don't deny Christ and convert to Islam? Will Muslims and people all over the world begin to mock and scoff at Christians and the Bible because Israel and the U.S. are destroyed and no Rapture or end or Second Coming of Christ happened? Several of the Bible prophecies predict God will not make a full end of the U.S., Israel and the world at this time and pockets of people and nations may or may not survive. God may save the U.S., Israel and the world if the people repent and turn from their sins and begin to humble themselves and heed the harbingers. But if they don't then these events may start to happen. This book was written by June 12, 2012.

While the first part of Sinclair’s work concerns the intangibles in life, focusing on matters of the mind, the second part of The Book of Life elects to address physical topics. Book of the Body shares Sinclair’s thoughts and research on diets, featuring discussions on how people should consume food, including fasting, and poisonous products. Book Short Summary:

C. S. Lewis--On the Christ of a Religious Economy I, Creation and Sub-Creation opens with Lewis on creation, the fall into original sin, and the human condition before God and how such an understanding permeated all his work, post-conversion. For Lewis, Christ, the second person of the Trinity, is the agent of creation and its redeemer. This leads into Lewis's representation through sub-creation: explaining salvation history and the purpose of the creation and the creature through story (The Chronicles of Narnia, The Space Trilogy, Screwtape, etc.), but also the question of multiple incarnations, and the encounters he pens between Aslan-Christ and creatures. What does this tell us about the human predicament and our state after the fall? This volume forms the first part of the third book in a series of studies on the theology of C. S. Lewis titled C. S. Lewis: Revelation and the Christ. The books are written for academics and students, but also, crucially, for those people, ordinary Christians, without a theology degree who enjoy and gain sustenance from reading Lewis's work.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK • From the National Book Award–winning author of Between the World and Me, a boldly conjured debut novel about a magical gift, a devastating loss, and an underground war for freedom. “This potent book about America’s most disgraceful sin establishes [Ta-Nehisi Coates] as a first-rate novelist.”—San Francisco Chronicle IN DEVELOPMENT AS A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • Adapted by Ta-Nehisi Coates and Kamilah Forbes, directed by Nia DaCosta, and produced by MGM, Plan B, and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Films NOMINATED FOR THE NAACP IMAGE AWARD • NAMED ONE OF PASTE’S BEST NOVELS OF THE DECADE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Time • NPR • The Washington Post • Chicago Tribune • Vanity Fair • Esquire • Good Housekeeping • Paste • Town & Country • The New York Public Library • Kirkus Reviews • Library Journal Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her—but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the Deep South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North. Even as he’s enlisted in the underground war between slavers and the enslaved, Hiram’s resolve to rescue the family he left behind endures. This is the dramatic story of an atrocity inflicted on generations of women, men, and children—the violent and capricious separation of families—and the war they waged to simply make lives with the people they loved. Written by one of today’s most exciting thinkers and writers, The Water Dancer is a propulsive, transcendent work that restores the humanity of those from whom everything was stolen. Praise for The Water Dancer “Ta-Nehisi Coates is the most important essayist in a generation and a writer who changed the national political conversation about race with his 2015 memoir, Between the World and Me. So naturally his debut novel comes with slightly unrealistic expectations—and then proceeds to exceed them. The Water Dancer . . . is a work of both staggering imagination and rich historical significance. . . . What’s most powerful is the way Coates enlists his notions of the fantastic, as well as his fluid prose, to probe a wound that never seems to heal. . . . Timeless and instantly canon-worthy.”—Rolling Stone

From lowcountry writer William Baldwin comes a new edition of his 1993 Lillian Smith Award–winning novel, The Hard to Catch Mercy. Including a new introduction by the author, this Southern Revivals edition makes available once more a story that touches on the issues of religion, race, and coming-of-age in the post–Civil War South, when the lines between these issues were not always clear. Set in fictional Cedar Point, a small southern community in the early 1900s, The Hard to Catch Mercy is told through the eyes of a young boy, Willie T., who is forced to confront the changing world around him. Including a cast of incredibly outlandish characters, Baldwin’s novel is a wild, darkly comic tale rich with trick mules, Christian voodoo, fire, brimstone, first love, death, and the end of the world as Willie T. knows it.

Book Short Summary:

An astonishing historical novel in the tradition of Schindler's List--evoking powerfully the danger and heroism of the Nazi resistance. What is the price of acting morally in a time of great evil, when sin and necessity seem twinned? Saints and Villains is a strikingly resonant novel that dramatizes this painful dilemma through the fictional re-creation of the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. This emblematic figure risked his life--and finally lost it--through his participation in the failed plot to assassinate Hitler and topple the Nazi regime. In a gripping and sweeping narrative that moves from Berlin to London to New York City, encompassing shattering historical events, clandestine meetings, perilous missions abroad, and eventual imprisonments and death, Denise Giardina brings to life an instance of shining courage in the charnel house that was Europe in the Second World War. A novel that is bold in conception and utterly convincing in its powers of fictional re-creation--a literary event.

Book Short Summary:

Did you know that the exact year of Jesus' crucifixion was predicted over five hundred years before His birth? Did you know that a similar prophecy predicts the exact year of Jesus' return to earth? In fact, the timing of the Second Coming of Christ is foreshadowed in no less than eleven places in the scriptures. These timelines all point to the end of human history within this generation. Although the Bible teaches that "no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen," (Mark 13:32) it says nothing about not knowing the year. Faithful Christians most certainly " won't be surprised when the day of the Lord comes," (1 Thessalonians 5:4) rather, they will " see the day approaching." (Hebrews 10:25) This book reveals that the Glorious Day will occur within three and a half years of AD 2036. CHRIST HAS DIED! CHRIST IS RISEN! CHRIST WILL COME AGAIN!

Book Short Summary:

LUKE BIBLE COMMENTARY After nearly 40 years of full-time ministry, Brother Swaggart published his first commentary on the book of Genesis that was later described as “the most helpful Bible commentary ever published.” It would take nearly 20 years to complete the entire commentary series—from Genesis to Revelation. True to Pentecostal theology, the Jimmy Swaggart Commentary collection leads its readers chapter by chapter to a better understanding of the Bible. Rather than providing notes on every Bible verse, these commentaries focus on the salient verses of each chapter to offer the reader a condensed synopsis of what the Holy Spirit intended. Where most relevant, cultural and historical references are also included, along with explanations of the allegories, types, and symbolisms used in the Bible to add depth and dimension for students of the Holy Scriptures. Yet, what seems to separate this work from all other commentaries are the biblical applications made to present day circumstances facing every believer. Printed on high-quality paper and bound with a beautiful hardback cover, this unique reference will be cherished by anyone who loves to study the Word of God.

Book Short Summary:

During the Silent Era, when most films dealt with dramatic or comedic takes on the “boy meets girl, boy loses girl” theme, other motion pictures dared to tackle such topics as rejuvenation, revivication, mesmerism, the supernatural and the grotesque. A Daughter of the Gods (1916), The Phantom of the Opera (1925), The Magician (1926) and Seven Footprints to Satan (1929) were among the unusual and startling films containing story elements that went far beyond the realm of “highly unlikely.” Using surviving documentation and their combined expertise, the authors catalog and discuss these departures from the norm in this encyclopedic guide to American horror, science fiction and fantasy in the years from 1913 through 1929.

Book Short Summary:

This book was written to venture beyond interpretations of Cormac McCarthy's characters as simple, antinomian, and non-psychological; and of his landscapes as unrelated to the violent arcs of often orphaned and always emotionally isolated and socially detached characters. As McCarthy usually eschews direct indications of psychology, his landscapes allow us to infer much about their motivations. The relationship of ambivalent nostalgia for domesticity to McCarthy's descriptions of space remains relatively unexamined at book length, and through less theoretical application than close reading. By including McCarthy's latest book, this study offer the only complete study of all nine novels. Within McCarthy studies, this book extends and complicates a growing interest in space and domesticity in his work. The author combines a high regard for McCarthy's stylistic prowess with a provocative reading of how his own psychological habits around gender issues and family relations power books that only appear to be stories of masculine heroics, expressions of misogynistic fear, or antinomian rejections of civilized life.

Book Short Summary:

This edition of Doctor Faustus features annotated versions, with modernized spelling and punctuation, of the 1604 A-text and the 1592 text of Marlowe's source, the English Faust Book--a translation of the best-selling Historia von Johann Fausten published in Frankfurt in 1587, which recounts the strange story of Doctor John Faustus and his pact with the spirit Mephistopheles. David Wootton's Introduction charts Marlowe's brief, meteoric career; the delicate social and political climate in which Doctor Faustus was staged and the vexed question of the religious sensibilities to which it may have catered; the interpretive significance of variations between the A and B texts; and the shrewd and subversive uses to which Marlowe put the English Faust Book in crafting, according to Wootton, a drama in which orthodox Christian teaching triumphed, but in which Faustus has all the best lines.

Book Short Summary:

The Holy Bible. What is it? It is Gods love letter to humanity. This is a very shortened version to show that Jesus Christ is the subject of the entire Bible. He is real, we dont need to invent any more Super heroes because He is THE ONE. All the Patriarchs at the beginning of the book as well as the prophets that feature later are all talking and living out aspects of the life of Jesus Christ so that when He was here He constantly referred to It is written as the reason for Him doing something because it was important to Him being able to save the human race from its own self-destruction. They are mentioned by name as having done something which they did not realise the significance of at the time. We can only understand things backwards but life has to be lived forwards. Jesus wants to save everyone but we shut ourselves out by the silly things we do. I sincerely hope that you find the love and peace He offers to you in His book.

Book Short Summary:

Die Beiträge entstanden 1999-2002 im Rahmen der Arbeitsgruppe The Formation of the Book of the Twelve der Society of Biblical Literature.

Book Short Summary:

This first full biography of the Victorian romantic novelist Hall Caine traces his life from childhood in Liverpool, through his time as 'housemate' to Dante Gabriel Rossetti and association with members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood to his triumphant career as a popular novelist. Caine, a swashbuckling character who might have figured in one of his own novels, wrote fifteen novels and many non-fiction works. Vivien Allen has been able to take advantage of Caine's family papers and letters and, living in the Isle of Man, is well placed to write about this half-forgotten author of Manx descent who made his home there from 1896 until his death in 1931. The book contains letters to Hall Caine from the American, Dr Francis Tumblety who has been recently identified as the probable 'Jack the Ripper'. These letters were mentioned in the Channel 4 (UK) documentary 'Jack the Ripper' 1996. Much of the archive material was accessed with the assistance of the New York Public Library and the New York Theatre Museum.

Book Short Summary:

In 1919 a generation of young women discovered that there were, quite simply, not enough men to go round, and the statistics confirmed it. After the 1921 Census, the press ran alarming stories of the 'Problem of the Surplus Women - Two Million who can never become Wives...'. This book is about those women, and about how they were forced, by a tragedy of historic proportions, to stop depending on men for their income, their identity and their future happiness.
