*#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER *Winner, Kobo Emerging Writer Prize Nonfiction *Winner, Indigenous Voices Awards *Winner, High Plains Book Awards *Finalist, CBC Canada Reads *A Globe and Mail Book of the Year *An Indigo Book of the Year *A CBC Best Canadian Nonfiction Book of the Year In this extraordinary and inspiring debut memoir, Jesse Thistle, once a high school dropout and now a rising Indigenous scholar, chronicles his life on the streets and how he overcame trauma and addiction to discover the truth about who he is. If I can just make it to the next minute...then I might have a chance to live; I might have a chance to be something more than just a struggling crackhead. From the Ashes is a remarkable memoir about hope and resilience, and a revelatory look into the life of a Métis-Cree man who refused to give up. Abandoned by his parents as a toddler, Jesse Thistle briefly found himself in the foster-care system with his two brothers, cut off from all they had known. Eventually the children landed in the home of their paternal grandparents, whose tough-love attitudes quickly resulted in conflicts. Throughout it all, the ghost of Jesse’s drug-addicted father haunted the halls of the house and the memories of every family member. Struggling with all that had happened, Jesse succumbed to a self-destructive cycle of drug and alcohol addiction and petty crime, spending more than a decade on and off the streets, often homeless. Finally, he realized he would die unless he turned his life around. In this heartwarming and heart-wrenching memoir, Jesse Thistle writes honestly and fearlessly about his painful past, the abuse he endured, and how he uncovered the truth about his parents. Through sheer perseverance and education—and newfound love—he found his way back into the circle of his Indigenous culture and family. An eloquent exploration of the impact of prejudice and racism, From the Ashes is, in the end, about how love and support can help us find happiness despite the odds.

'We didn't want to be wiping porridge off the walls - we wanted places no rougher than a farm pond. The silence in these places was complete - so much so that we found ourselves speaking in whispers.' Many sailors dream of a quiet life living aboard a classic yacht. Few reach that dream following the same path as Justin Ruthven-Tyers and his wife. After a fire destroyed everything they owned, the couple decided to build their own classic sailing yacht and live aboard in the wilds of Scotland - up creeks, in rocky pools, in lovely desolate places whose descriptions would make any armchair traveller ache to go there. They started their new life by felling trees for the timber they needed to build their boat, the first unusual step in their unique story. With a wonderful turn of phrase, Justin's humorous narrative will engage those who dream of living a similar lifestyle, and inspire those motivated to attempt it.

Book Short Summary:

This is a true and incredible story of a Japanese adolescent, Shinji Mikamo, who miraculously survived the first atomic bombing of human kinds. He was on top of his house roof with nothing to shield him at only 3⁄4 of a mile (1,200m) from the epicenter in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 toward the end of the World War II. But what made Shinji stand out from most of the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, or even of many other man-made disasters in our history, he never hated Americans as aggressors. He somehow saw things from a much bigger perspective even in the very strict Japanese military government’s mind control of civilians during the war. As one of his three legacy-carrying daughters, Dr. Akiko Mikamo wrote his story to send out the messages of human love and power of forgiveness to remind the world our worst enemies of yesterday could become the best friends of tomorrow.

Book Short Summary:

The long-awaited memoir by Canada’s most celebrated Olympian and advocate for mental health. From one of Canada’s most decorated Olympians comes a raw but life-affirming story of one woman’s struggle with depression. In 2006, when Clara Hughes stepped onto the Olympic podium in Torino, Italy, she became the first and only athlete ever to win multiple medals in both Summer and Winter Games. Four years later, she was proud to carry the Canadian flag at the head of the Canadian team as they participated in the opening ceremony of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games. But there’s another story behind her celebrated career as an athlete, behind her signature billboard smile. While most professional athletes devote their entire lives to training, Clara spent her teenage years using drugs and drinking to escape the stifling home life her alcoholic father had created in Elmwood, Winnipeg. She was headed nowhere fast when, at sixteen, she watched transfixed in her living room as gold medal speed skater Gaétan Boucher effortlessly raced in the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Dreaming of one day competing herself, Clara channeled her anger, frustration, and raw ambition into the endurance sports of speed skating and cycling. By 2010, she had become a six-time Olympic medalist. But after more than a decade in the gruelling world of professional sports that stripped away her confidence and bruised her body, Clara began to realize that her physical extremes, her emotional setbacks, and her partying habits were masking a severe depression. After winning bronze in the last speed skating race of her career, she decided to retire from that sport, determined to repair herself. She has emerged as one of our most committed humanitarians, advocating for a variety of social causes both in Canada and around the world. In 2010, she became national spokesperson for Bell Canada’s Let’s Talk campaign in support of mental health awareness, using her Olympic standing to share the positive message of the power of forgiveness. Told with honesty and passion, Open Heart, Open Mind is Clara’s personal journey through physical and mental pain to a life where love and understanding can thrive. This revelatory and inspiring story will touch the hearts of all Canadians.

Book Short Summary:

A warm, wise, and urgent guide to parenting in uncertain times, from a longtime reporter on race, reproductive health, and politics In We Live for the We, first-time mother Dani McClain sets out to understand how to raise her daughter in what she, as a black woman, knows to be an unjust--even hostile--society. Black women are more likely to die during pregnancy or birth than any other race; black mothers must stand before television cameras telling the world that their slain children were human beings. What, then, is the best way to keep fear at bay and raise a child so she lives with dignity and joy? McClain spoke with mothers on the frontlines of movements for social, political, and cultural change who are grappling with the same questions. Following a child's development from infancy to the teenage years, We Live for the We touches on everything from the importance of creativity to building a mutually supportive community to navigating one's relationship with power and authority. It is an essential handbook to help us imagine the society we build for the next generation.

Book Short Summary:

In The Fire and the Ashes, long-time union economist and policy analyst Andrew Jackson looks back on a fascinating career in the labour movement, the NDP, and left politics, combining keen historical analysis with a political manifesto for today. As one of the few trade union economists in Canada, Jackson brings a unique insider perspective and decades of experience to bear on his critical reflections on the history and changing fortunes of the NDP, the failures of neoliberalism, and the waning and recent renewal of the democratic socialist tradition. What plays out is a battle of ideas fought by Jackson and the wider left—one meant to rekindle both political veterans and a new generation of activists who believe that a true democracy cannot exist with great inequalities of wealth and political power, and that social ownership and public investment must be brought squarely into the mainstream.

Book Short Summary:

Inspired by true historical events, From the Ashes is the unforgettable story of a tortured man, torn between his ideals, the iron fist of Stalinism and the woman he loves. Marlene has no love lost for the Soviet occupying forces, who turn out to be every bit as cruel as the Nazis were. Living in constant fear of the Russian soldiers, she works in a hospital to make ends meet, where she meets Werner, a cold-hearted career politician. Werner, a German émigré to Moscow, returns to his hometown with the highest hopes for a better future. Sent by the communist party to bring freedom, wealth and happiness to the people, he’s soon caught in a moral conflict between loyalty to his party and his conscience. When Marlene criticizes the socialist German regime, she becomes the target of powerful men. Oblivious to the danger for her own life, she refused to back down, and there’s only one thing Werner can do to save her life: defy the party line. But will he be able to shed decades of indoctrination for the woman he loves? And what will become of him if he does? Because those who speak up against the regime, usually find themselves on a train to Siberia or worse. World War II is over, but another battle has just begun… From the bestselling author of the 'War Girls Series' comes this nail-biting story about Berlin sliding into the Cold War.

A sequel to Jann Rowland’s beloved first novel Acting on Faith, A Life from the Ashes chronicles Lydia’s journey toward self-discovery, knowledge, and a future she never knew she wanted. Having achieved her fondest wish, Lydia Wickham leaves Longbourn in the company of her handsome husband for Newcastle, certain she is embarking on a grand adventure. But not all is as it seems. Unbeknownst to Lydia, the man she thinks she has married does not exist, as he is merely a mask for a callous libertine who cares nothing for others and considers himself chained to a woman he never wished to marry. Slowly, Lydia learns the true measure of her husband and realizes that she was hasty in insisting on marrying him. It is only through the patient tutelage of her commanding officer’s wife that she comes to understand there is more to life than frivolous pursuits and men wearing red coats. Unfortunately for Lydia, it might be too late, for she has cast her lot with a man so reprehensible that none know of what he is capable.

It also means hiding what he is so people can’t take advantage of him like his alpha did, and now, he doesn’t know how to tell Reece—or if he should. Carey is in Rosewood to protect two unicorn shifters. As a phoenix shifter, it’s an easy job for him, and he’s looking forward to discovering the town and the pack. He didn’t expect to meet his mate, but he’s over the moon. He doesn’t even care that Sage is in love with another guy. If anything, he’s happy about it. Who wouldn’t want two boyfriends, right? Reece has been mourning since he lost his mate and their little girl. He’s been in love with Sage for almost as long as he’s been back in Rosewood, but he’s never done anything about it. He never planned to, either. But then Carey barges into his and Sage’s life. Reece doesn’t know if he can be with two men, especially since Sage and Carey share a mate bond, but it’s either try or be alone for the rest of his life—and he doesn’t know if he can do that, either.

Book Short Summary:

When a wildfire destroyed her home and worldly possessions in the hills above Los Angeles, it didn’t take Megan Edwards long to recognize an opportunity. It took her husband a little longer (“Give me five minutes to grieve!”), but they were both soon planning to make the most of their sudden “stufflessness” and hit the road. They did so a few months later in a freshly built four-wheel-drive motorhome that was even more unusual because of the office in the back instead of a bedroom. This all happened back when “Internet” had not yet entered the lexicon but “email” had. The mobile office would allow Edwards to file stories with the newspapers she wrote for by cell phone. That was the idea, at least. At the beginning of 1994, cell service was patchy, unreliable, and expensive. They also thought they’d be traveling for six months or so, when, they believed, they’d settle down and get back to normal. But five years and thousands of miles later, they were still on the road. In that time, they’d watched the Internet grow from a mysterious fad prized by people in remote locales into an unstoppable universal phenomenon. They started a website, RoadTripAmerica.com, to share road tripping tips and ideas. Slowly, their dream of being “at work, at home, and on the road, all at the same grand time” became a reality. This edition marks the twentieth anniversary of Edwards’s memoir, which was first released in 1999. At its heart a story of making lemonade when life gives you lemons, this memoir is also a riveting and at times hilarious look at the early years of the World Wide Web. With a new introduction by the author and a foreword by Chris Epting, enjoy an armchair adventure across North America when the Internet was young. This edition also includes 22 photos dating from when the author lived on the road. -- Megan Edwards

Book Short Summary:

In many ways, life for Allen Brady began on a 1954 afternoon when his childhood home in Hope Hull, Alabama erupted in flames and burned to the ground. He was four years old. The family home was rebuilt and given the address of 391. In 1974, he experienced another rebirth while in the military in Okinawa—that was the year he married Yoko. Her address included 391, which was eerily similar to his own. In this memoir, Brady recalls the series of events that brought him from Alabama to a faraway island where the course of his life was set. He begins with memories of a small farm existence complete with a mule and wagon (no car and no television). While white, he was taught by his parents to respect everyone no matter the color of their skin in this racially segregated state. Join the author as he looks back at his life’s unexpected turns, his involvement in Vietnam as part of the Army Security Agency, and what it meant to be a “research operator” working under a cloak of secrecy.

Book Short Summary:

In December of 2016, Kristin Topping's life changed in a fraction of a second. It wasn't supposed to happen this way. She was an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, she had a charmed career that took her all over the world as an engineering specialist, and she aspired to do great and important things. A split second was all it took to wash those dreams down the drain. A concussion, or in Kristin's case a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) with loss of consciousness, is a serious injury that is accompanied with changes to a person's physical well-being, cognitive abilities, and can result in an altered mental state. The training and the social pressures instilled over twenty-two years of military service were a deterrent to her seeking help right away for her injury. Kristin wallowed in despair for months before she would admit the significance of her problem. Her relationships collapsed, her ability to function in and out of the workplace deteriorated and her purpose was lost. When she finally admitted to herself that she needed help, she was thrown into a rehabilitation labyrinth with the hope of regaining simple skills that were taken for granted. This isn't a sad story though; this is a story about how Kristin's indoor garden saved her life.

Book Short Summary:

As a little girl, I remember being told, "Why don't you kill yourself-you are just taking air from someone who deserves it." That was my mother who said that. She reminded me almost daily how stupid I was, that she hated me, and how no one wanted me. After hearing those things and being passed around on a constant basis to live with strangers along with abuse from her, I started to believe what I was told. My mother then told me that I was not her daughter. I never knew my grandmother or grandfather, aunts, uncles, cousins, or anyone who was part of my family. I cried a lot and trusted no one. As years went by, I tried to buy friendships and love-of course, it didn't work. I became a rug mat for everyone. I was lied to, used, abused, and taken for granted. At work, I did way more than what the job required without compensation for it. I had very low self-esteem. Then something changed when I had my sons. I became the mother, father, and anything or anyone my sons needed. We had each other. As time went on, I started learning and loving myself. Through our lives, our experiences shape who we are. Whether it is something said or actions taken (or not) by you or someone else, it does affect lives. With all of the outside influences defining us, sometimes we lose sight of who we are. Just like a fingerprint that only applies to one person, you are unique! There is not even one person just like you! You have your own likes, dislikes, dreams, and gifts. The world looks at you from the outside in-the trick is for you to know yourself from the inside out!
