Book Short Summary:

New York Times Bestseller: Sweeping from the 1850s through the early 1920s, this towering family saga examines the price of ambition and power. Joseph Francis Xavier Armagh is twelve years old when he gets his first glimpse of the promised land of America through a dirty porthole in steerage on an Irish immigrant ship. His long voyage, dogged by tragedy, ends not in the great city of New York but in the bigoted, small town of Winfield, Pennsylvania, where his younger brother, Sean, and his infant sister, Regina, are sent to an orphanage. Joseph toils at whatever work will pay a living wage and plans for the day he can take his siblings away from St. Agnes’s Orphanage and make a home for them all. Joseph’s journey will catapult him to the highest echelons of power and grant him entry into the most elite political circles. Even as misfortune continues to follow the Armagh family like an ancient curse, Joseph takes his revenge against the uncaring world that once took everything from him. He orchestrates his eldest son Rory’s political ascent from the offspring of an Irish immigrant to US senator. And Joseph will settle for nothing less than the pinnacle of glory: seeing his boy crowned the first Catholic president of the United States. Spanning seventy years, Captains and the Kings, which was adapted into an eight-part television miniseries, is Taylor Caldwell’s masterpiece about nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America, and the grit, ambition, fortitude, and sheer hubris it takes for an immigrant to survive and thrive in a dynamic new land.

Book Short Summary:

Consider Miles Davis, horn held high, sculpting a powerful musical statement full of tonal patterns, inside jokes, and thrilling climactic phrases—all on the fly. Or think of a comedy troupe riffing on a couple of cues from the audience until the whole room is erupting with laughter. Or maybe it’s a team of software engineers brainstorming their way to the next Google, or the Einsteins of the world code-cracking the mysteries of nature. Maybe it’s simply a child playing with her toys. What do all of these activities share? With wisdom, humor, and joy, philosopher Stephen T. Asma answers that question in this book: imagination. And from there he takes us on an extraordinary tour of the human creative spirit. Guided by neuroscience, animal behavior, evolution, philosophy, and psychology, Asma burrows deep into the human psyche to look right at the enigmatic but powerful engine that is our improvisational creativity—the source, he argues, of our remarkable imaginational capacity. How is it, he asks, that a story can evoke a whole world inside of us? How are we able to rehearse a skill, a speech, or even an entire scenario simply by thinking about it? How does creativity go beyond experience and help us make something completely new? And how does our moral imagination help us sculpt a better society? As he shows, we live in a world that is only partly happening in reality. Huge swaths of our cognitive experiences are made up by “what-ifs,” “almosts,” and “maybes,” an imagined terrain that churns out one of the most overlooked but necessary resources for our flourishing: possibilities. Considering everything from how imagination works in our physical bodies to the ways we make images, from the mechanics of language and our ability to tell stories to the creative composition of self-consciousness, Asma expands our personal and day-to-day forms of imagination into a grand scale: as one of the decisive evolutionary forces that has guided human development from the Paleolithic era to today. The result is an inspiring look at the rich relationships among improvisation, imagination, and culture, and a privileged glimpse into the unique nature of our evolved minds.

Book Short Summary:

What he himself characteristically called 'his idiosyncratic mode of regard' is a factor few readers of Hardy's novels can overlook and one with which all serious students of his fiction must come to terms. The fact that there is nevertheless little final agreement about the nature of his achievement has prompted Miss Vigar to make a fresh study of Hardy's own notes and essays on the art of the novel and to analyse his fictional technique in the light of these unduly neglected observations. Her approach centres on Hardy's pervasive theme of the contrast between appearance and reality and on his frequent use of 'pictorial' devices to express his imaginative vision. She is able to develop a critical account of Hardy's work that can convincingly explain, by reference to the same criteria, both its strengths and its weaknesses, its successes and failures.

Book Short Summary:

The essays in this volume provide rich fodder for reflection on topics that are of urgent interest to all thinking people. Each one suggests new ways to contemplate our own role(s) in the production and promotion of evil. The authors encourage the reader to be challenged, outraged, and disturbed by what you read here. The eighth gathering of Global Perspectives on Evil and Human Wickedness, which took place in Salzburg in March 2007, provided a look at evil past, present, and future, from a broad spectrum of disciplinary perspectives. Papers were presented on the Holocaust, genocide, violence, sadism, pædophilia, physical, verbal, and visual weapons of mass destruction, and on the effects of a variety of media on our apperception of and responses to evil. One of the overarching themes that emerged was the ethical role of the observer or witness to evil, the sense that all of our writings are, in an echo of Thomas Merton's salient phrase, the conjectures of guilty bystanders. The notion of complicity was examined from a number of angles, and imbued the gathering with a sense of urgency: that our common goal was to engender change by raising awareness of the countless and ubiquitous ways in which evil can be actively or passively carried on and promoted. The papers selected for this volume provide a representative sample of the lively, provocative, and often disturbing discussions that took place over the course of that conference. This volume also contains a few papers from a sister conference, Cultures of Violence, which was held in Oxford in 2004. These papers have been included here because of their striking relevance to the themes that emerged in the Evil conference of 2007. At the Interface/Probing the Boundaries seeks to encourage and promote cutting edge interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary projects and inquiry. By bringing people together from differing contexts, disciplines, professions, and vocations, the aim is to engage in conversations that are innovative, imaginative, and creatively interactive. Inter-Disciplinary dialogue enables people to go beyond the boundaries of what they usually encounter and share in perspectives that are new, challenging, and richly rewarding. This kind of dialogue often illuminates one's own area of work, is suggestive of new possibilities for development, and creates exciting horizons for future conversations with persons from a wide variety of national and international settings. By sharing cross-disciplinary insights and perspectives, ATI/PTB publications are designed to be both exploratory examinations of particular areas and issues, and rigorous inquiries into specific subjects. Books in the series are enabling resources which will encourage sustained and creative dialogue, and become the future resource for further inquiries and research.

Book Short Summary:

Best known for his Pulitzer Prize–winning novel Lonesome Dove and his Academy Award–winning screenplay for Brokeback Mountain, Larry McMurtry is the author of twenty-nine novels, three memoirs, two collections of essays, and more than thirty screenplays. In Understanding Larry McMurtry, Steven Frye considers a broad range of McMurtry's most important novels and offers detailed textual analyses of works such as Horseman, Pass By, The Last Picture Show, Moving On, and Lonesome Dove to reveal the manner in which McMurtry engages the human condition. Characters are at the heart of McMurtry's fiction, whether they are nineteenth- or twentieth-century ranchers, modern rodeo men, or women grappling with the angst and confusion of life in the suburbs of Houston. He has created characters rich in texture, such as Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call, not only to encourage an understanding of the persistent force of American mythology but also to transcend type so that they emerge as quintessentially human figures grappling with circumstances beyond their control. McMurtry portrays with depth and insight the conundrums of the modern moment and its relation to heritage, and he deals as well with the intensities of the human mind as it negotiates with a complex and sometimes indifferent world. In Understanding Larry McMurtry, Frye offers a comprehensive treatment of one of the most important living authors, one who has emerged as a central figure in a rich and compelling contemporary canon.

A bold new theory of leadership drawn from elite captains throughout sports—named one of the best business books of the year by CNBC, The New York Times, Forbes, strategy+business, The Globe and Mail, and Sports Illustrated “The book taught me that there’s no cookie-cutter way to lead. Leading is not just what Hollywood tells you. It’s not the big pregame speech. It’s how you carry yourself every day, how you treat the people around you, who you are as a person.”—Mitchell Trubisky, quarterback, Chicago Bears Now featuring analysis of the five-time Super Bowl champion New England Patriots and their captain, Tom Brady The seventeen most dominant teams in sports history had one thing in common: Each employed the same type of captain—a singular leader with an unconventional set of skills and tendencies. Drawing on original interviews with athletes, general managers, coaches, and team-building experts, Sam Walker identifies the seven core qualities of the Captain Class—from extreme doggedness and emotional control to tactical aggression and the courage to stand apart. Told through riveting accounts of pressure-soaked moments in sports history, The Captain Class will challenge your assumptions of what inspired leadership looks like. Praise for The Captain Class “Wildly entertaining and thought-provoking . . . makes you reexamine long-held beliefs about leadership and the glue that binds winning teams together.”—Theo Epstein, president of baseball operations, Chicago Cubs “If you care about leadership, talent development, or the art of competition, you need to read this immediately.”—Daniel Coyle, author of The Culture Code “The insights in this book are tremendous.”—Bob Myers, general manager, Golden State Warriors “An awesome book . . . I find myself relating a lot to its portrayal of the out-of the-norm leader.”—Carli Lloyd, co-captain, U.S. Soccer Women’s National Team “A great read . . . Sam Walker used data and a systems approach to reach some original and unconventional conclusions about the kinds of leaders that foster enduring success. Most business and leadership books lapse into clichés. This one is fresh.”—Jeff Immelt, chairman and former CEO, General Electric “I can’t tell you how much I loved The Captain Class. It identifies something many people who’ve been around successful teams have felt but were never able to articulate. It has deeply affected my thoughts around how we build our culture.”—Derek Falvey, chief baseball officer, Minnesota Twins

This Crazy Love: A Gay Romance Collection is an M/M romance bundle bringing you 3 of Topher James’ steamy, sensual, and romantic M/M love stories. From brand new experiences, to new self-discoveries and awakenings, to lusty first times, and love that stands the test of time, these three gay romances will make you laugh, smile, cry, fan yourself, and leave you wanting more. Contained in this box set are the M/M romance novels A Second Chance, Finding Love Again, and Where You Least Expect. * A Second Chance I never thought I’d love again. Even if I could, I didn’t even know if I wanted to. I was betrayed… I had my heart broken. And I was in mourning… I lost a dear friend. Something inside me just shut down. I didn’t want to go out. I didn’t want to face the world. But then I saw him again… Keifer… the man who broke my heart. And it all came rushing back. The emotion, the fire… the heat… the memories… the rage. So I punched him. Yeah, I punched him real good. I thought it would be over. I never expected to keep thinking about him. I never expected that he… that he was still thinking about me. I always said to myself that I wouldn’t give anybody a second chance. Cross me, and you’re out, gone, and we’re finished. But now I find myself changing my tune. I don’t know if I’ll be able to give him a second chance. But I know that I’m going to try… and we’ll see where this goes. Because I still love Keifer. And doesn’t love deserve a second chance? * Finding Love Again William knew he’d never walk again. He’d lost that part of his life… but he never thought he’d lose more. Lose his wife. Lose his life. The injury changed everything. They injury stole everything. He was ready to give up hope. The only thing he still lived for was his physical therapy sessions. The only thing he still lived for was his budding friendship with his therapist, Lucius. The man was kind and gentle, listened and helped. He was the only support William had. And to William’s surprise, he realized that he was beginning to fall in love with his physical therapist. Now… now an ex-wife and ex-life later, he’s finding a reason to hope again. To live again. And… to love again. * Where You Least Expect Love is confusing. It intertwines with lust, with a base attraction so animal and powerful, it can make a man do things he shouldn’t. It can make a man think things are one way… when they are the other. I thought I was in love with Terrence. He was everything I wanted in a man. But I slowly began to realize that I was just in love with the fantasy of him. Terrence in theory. And the person I was really falling in love with… the man who would stand by my side, love me, support me… Was someone I could never have imagined. Greg used to cruise for girls. Greg was the ladies man on campus, a star athlete back in the day. And here he was… his gorgeous eyes looking right through me. And he’s telling me that he’s falling for me… And that this could be the beginning of our happily ever after. *

Book Short Summary:

Laozi, Marx, the Buddha, Ibsen, Machiavelli – these are just a few of the world’s great thinkers who have weighed in on the subject of leadership over the centuries. Yet the contemporary student of leadership often overlooks many of these names in favor of more recent theorists hailing from the social sciences. Understanding Leadership: An Arts and Humanities Perspective takes a different angle, employing the works of the great philosophers, authors, and artists found in world civilization and presenting an arts and humanities perspective on the study of leadership. The authors build their conceptual framework using their Five Components of Leadership Model, which recognizes the leader, the followers, the goal, the context, and the cultural values and norms that make up the leadership process. Supporting the text are a wealth of case studies that reflect on works such as Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem, Eugène Delacroix’s painting Liberty Leading the People, Charlie Chaplin’s film Modern Times, Athol Fugard’s play "Master Harold" . . . and the boys, Laozi’s poetic work Dao De Jing, and Antonín Dvořák’s New World Symphony. The authors also introduce studies from various world cultures to emphasize the role that cultural values and norms play in leadership. This illuminating framework promotes the multidimensional thinking that is necessary for understanding and problem-solving in a complex world. Understanding Leadership: An Arts and Humanities Perspective will be a valuable resource for both undergraduate and postgraduate leadership students, while leadership professionals will also appreciate the book’s unique liberal arts and cultural approach.

Book Short Summary:

Sound Of Love: A Gay Romance Collection is the third bundle of 3 sensual and steamy M/M romances from authors Topher James, Raiden King, and Reya Karl, who previously brought you Journey Of Love: A Gay Romance Collection, and What The Heart Wants: A Gay Romance Collection. From sexy and sweet brand new experiences, to new self-discoveries and awakenings, to lusty first times, and to love that stands the test of time, these three gay romance stories will make you laugh, smile, cry, fan yourself, and leave you satisfied. Contained in this 350+ page box set anthology are the M/M romance books Where You Least Expect, The Young Nurse, and The Reunion. * The Young Nurse My marriage to my wife ended once the kids left the house. All of a sudden, we didn't know each other. We divorced. It was amicable. It's not exactly a new story. Here I am, forty-three, and in shape. Not to get too cocky, but let's just say I'm the kind of man my age who is *very* eligible. The problem? Every woman I've dated I've had no interest in. What exactly is wrong with me? Then I got sick. I had to stay in the hospital. That's where I met Taden, my young, handsome male nurse... ...And everything in my life changed. He asked if I needed help getting into the shower, and he helped me undress. His touch lingered on my skin like electricity. But I'm not gay. I'm attracted to women! So why do I find myself thinking about Taden every waking minute? Why do I fantasize about him in my dreams? And why do I desperately want to tell him... ...so he can touch me again? * The Reunion It all started with a chance encounter. I bumped into Gary in St. Ives, the sea-salty air whipping past us. His deep brown eyes stopped time itself, and the coppery hair that lined his chest sparkled in the sun. Little did I know that we were schoolmates way back when. An impromptu reunion, you could say. But I had no idea what lay in store for me. Gary invited me onto his yacht. Gary flirted with me. And before I knew it, every inhibition I had was crumbling. This was supposed to be a relaxing holiday. Who could have expected it would turn into a torrid affair with a gorgeous man? Who could have expected that happily ever after might just be on the itinerary? *
