Hardboiled noir starring Detroit PI Amos Walker: “For readers who can’t get enough of Elmore Leonard and Ross Thomas, try Estleman. He’s that good” (People). After a tour in Vietnam and several years working the streets of Detroit as a private investigator, Amos Walker has seen a lot. But he’s never encountered anything quite like his newest assignment. Ann Maringer, an aging stripper hard at work at one of the city’s many low-grade joints, hires him to find a missing person: herself. She expects to disappear any day now, she says, and she wants to be found. He goes to her apartment the next day, hoping for more information, but Ann was true to her word and has disappeared completely, leaving behind nothing but a carton of Bel-Airs and a dead man on the floor. Unshaken by the body or the circumstances, Walker sets out to find his client. After all, she paid in advance. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Loren D. Estleman including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

Gabby Leggett left her Boston family with dreams of making it big as a model/actress in Hollywood. Two years later, she disappears from her apartment. Her family, former boyfriend, friends--and the police--have no idea where she is and no leads. Leggett's mother hires Spenser to find her, with help of his former apprentice, Zebulon Sixkill, now an L.A. private eye. Spenser barely has time to unpack before the trail leads to a powerful movie studio boss, the Armenian mob, and a shadowy empowerment group some say might be a dangerous cult. And not all those who wander are lost.

One halo brought sight to Brielle. Another offers sweet relief from what she sees. Brielle can’t help but see the Celestial. Even without the halo, the invisible realm is everywhere she looks. It’s impossibly beautiful—and terrifying, especially now. Because a battle rages above Stratus, Oregon. The Terrestrial Veil is ripping, and demons walk the streets past unseeing mortals. Dark, sticky fear drips from every face, and nightmares haunt Brielle’s sleep. Worst of all, Jake is gone. The only boy she’s ever loved has been taken by the demon, Damien. When she receives instructions from the Throne Room leading her to Jake, she unknowingly walks into a diabolical and heartbreaking trap. Now she’s stranded in a sulfurous desert with the Prince of Darkness himself, and he’s offering her another halo—a mirrored ring that will destroy her Celestial vision. All she has to do is wear it and she’ll see no more of the invisible world. No more fear. No more nightmares. No more demons. It’s a gift. And best of all: it comes with the promise of a future with Jake, something the Throne Room seems to be taking from her. Will Brielle trade the beauty of the Celestial and the truth of the world around her just to feel ordinary again?

The first three mysteries featuring Detroit private investigator Amos Walker from the Shamus Award–winning “Stravinsky of hard-boiled prose” (John Lescroart). Four-time Shamus Award winner and Edgar Award finalist Loren D. Estleman launches an irresistible mystery series for “readers who can’t get enough of Elmore Leonard and Ross Thomas” (People). Motor City Blue: Vietnam vet, private investigator, and Bogart fan Amos Walker is scratching out a living looking for lost things in Detroit when he’s asked to find the adopted daughter of an ex-mobster. The only clue is a faded pornographic snapshot of the missing girl. Never one to give up, Walker witnesses the kidnapping of a former Vietnam friend and solves the murder case of a young black labor leader while slugging his way to a solution. Angel Eyes: Ann Maringer, an aging stripper still grinding in Detroit’s low-end dives, hires Amos Walker to locate a missing person: herself. She expects to disappear any day now—and wants to be found. True to her word, Ann disappears the next day, leaving behind a carton of cheap cigarettes and a dead body. Unshaken by the body or the circumstances, Walker sets out to find his client. After all, she paid in advance. The Midnight Man: An ambush on Detroit’s northwest side has left a police officer with a bullet lodged near his spine—and Amos Walker eager to bring the shooter to justice. He knows he’s treading dangerous ground, but being targeted by Detroit’s Finest is a twist he didn’t see coming. Walker soon learns that between the crippled cop’s sex-starved wife, militant rebels, the police, and a bounty hunter, trusting the wrong person could be a fatal mistake. Book Short Summary:

Giving My Life to Christ I would advise anyone who is planning to walk with God to consider the path they choose very carefully. I say this because one needs to be fully committed in their Christian pathway. They cannot expect to have one foot in the church and the other feet in the world. The Bible says, “No one can serve two masters for Jehovah is a jealous God” (Exodus 20:3–7). After reviewing my past life and reflecting on the friends I grew up with, most of whom are now dead or in prison, I believe that if I did not follow God, I could have been in the same situation. I used to be a part of a group of roughly seventeen to eighteen young men. However, to date, there are only five of them remaining, including myself. Some of these young men died through illnesses, gang-related warfare, or encounters with police. I know that giving my life to Christ was the best thing I have ever done. I am a witness, a messenger who God is using as an instrument to bring the Word to his people. I now believe that I have found my calling. My thirst for praising and worshiping God is unquenchable. Praise Ye the Lord. Amen.

Book Short Summary:

Semiotics offers a systematic approach to analysing the stylistic structure of film. When this study was originally published in 1983 this was a recent addition to the methods of film study and it presents an explanation of film semiotics with direct application to comparative film research. It takes as its representative subject one trilogy of films and applies semiology, with careful textual analysis. The book begins with a basic introduction to semiotics and the ideas of Christian Metz on cinesemiotics. It then presents a syntagmatic analysis of each of the three Dollars films, with an outline of autonomous segments for each and a discussion of the findings before undertaking a wider analysis of the trilogy as a whole with commentary on the stylistic unity of the director’s work. This book, an enduring detailed study of these three films, also outlines clearly this method of classifying the formal structuring codes of film communication.

Book Short Summary:

Film blurs the line between myth and reality better than any other artistic medium, one could argue. Using movies to explore the unconscious realms of society in order to reach a better understanding of what drives it, this book examines filmmakers and films that center on schizophrenic themes of alienation, paranoia, breakdown, fantasy, dreams, dementia and violence, and that address—as entertainment—the schizophrenic experience. The loss of individual identity as reflected in the films is investigated, as well as the shamanic potential inherent in the broader theme.

Book Short Summary:

The highly praised Western, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, has been used in many game-theory courses over the years and has also found its way into leading journals of this field. Using the rich material offered by this movie, alongside other elements from popular culture, literature and history, this book furthers this exploration into a fascinating area of economics. In his series of Schumpeter lectures, Manfred J. Holler uses his analysis of Sergio Leone’s movie as a starting point to argue that combinations of desires, secrets and second-mover advantages trigger conflicts but also allow for conflict resolution. Many people and organizations have a desire for secrecy, and this is often motivated by a desire to create a second-mover advantage, and by undercutting the second-mover advantage of others. This book demonstrates that the interaction of these three ingredients account for a large share of social problems and failures in politics and business but, somewhat paradoxically, can also help to overcome some of the problems that result by applying one or two of them in isolation. This book has been written for curious readers who want to see the world from a different perspective and who like simple mathematics alongside story telling. Its accessible approach means that it will be of use to students and academics alike, especially all those interested in decision making, game theory, and market entry.

Book Short Summary:

When the Senate released its so-called "Torture Report" in December 2014 the world would learn that, for years, the CIA had used unimaginably brutal methods to interrogate its prisoners - often without yielding any useful or truthful information. The agency had long and adamantly defended its use of torture, staunchly arguing that it was not only just but necessary for the country's safety. And even amid the revelations of the report, questions abound about whether torture can be considered a justifiable tool of national security. Is interrogational torture an effective method of extracting information? How good does the information extracted need to be for the torture to be considered successful? How often or how vigorously must torture be used to achieve valuable information? It may be the case that interrogational torture can never be justified under any circumstances, but, according to John Schiemann, if it is to be justified at all, it must be effective. According to more than one national poll, most Americans do believe that torture can work, and that it can be justified under certain circumstances. But if the information that torturers extract is bad, then the method amounts to nothing more than pure sadism. So, how can we solve the dilemma over whether to torture or not to torture? In this book, John Schiemann takes a truly unique approach to the question of torture: game theory. Thinking of torture as a "game" played between an interrogator and a detainee, the book walks the reader through the logic of interrogational torture, comparing the outcomes to the claims made by torture proponents. The book draws on a wide variety of sources ranging from records of the Inquisition to secret CIA memos to trace this logic, illustrating each outcome of the model with a narrative from the real world of interrogational torture. Does Torture Work? is an absorbing and provocative take on one of the most discussed human rights and security dilemmas of our time.

Book Short Summary:

Despite our tendency to think of the demonic as evil and the angelic as good, our own legends don't always bear this out. Angels can be the incarnation of light and salvation, but they can also fall - Satan himself is a fallen angel. Demons can be truly demonic, but these unearthly creatures can also, on occasion, lend humankind a hand. Temptation can lead to revelation, supernatural messengers who bring true justice may not be welcomed, and beings seeking redemption can be blind to mortal needs. Stories from world-renowned authors of science fiction and fantasy - including Neil Gaiman, George R. R. Martin and Joyce Carol Oates - and rising stars portray angels in all their glory, demons at their most dreadful, and a surprising variety of modern interpretations of ancient myth.
