Book Short Summary:

E. Lynn Harris's blend of rich, romantic storytelling and controversial contemporary issues like race and bisexuality have found an enthusiastic and diverse audience across America. Readers celebrate the arrival in paperback of his second novel, Just As I Am, which picks up where Invisible Life left off, introducing Harris's appealing and authentic characters to a new set of joys, conflicts, and choices. Raymond, a young black lawyer from the South, struggles to come to terms with his sexuality and with the grim reality of AIDS. Nicole, an aspiring singer/actress, experiences frustration in both her career and in her attempts to find a genuine love relationship. Both characters share an eclectic group of friends who challenge them, and the reader, to look at themselves and the world around thern through different eyes. By portraying Nicole's and Raymond's joys, as well as their pain, Harris never ceases to remind us that life, like love, is about self-acceptance. In this vivid portrait of contemporary black life, with all its pressures and the complications of bisexuality, AIDS, and racism, Harris confirms a faith in the power of love -- love of all kinds -- to thrill and to heal, which will warm the hearts of readers everywhere.

Book Short Summary:

Something Old, Something New: Contemporary Entanglements of Religion and Secularity offers a fresh perspective on debates surrounding religious and secular thinking. In each chapter, Wayne Glausser focuses on a topic of contemporary relevance in which something old (the sacrament of extreme unction, Greek rhetorical tropes, scholastic theology) entangles with something new (psilocybin therapy for the dying, the New Atheism, cognitive science). Glausser uses the term "entanglement" to describe his distinctive approach to the relationship between religion and secularity. The concept of entanglement refers to a contentious but oddly intimate relationship in which secular ideas compete with corresponding religious convictions, but neither side wins by displacing the other. As traditional religious knowledge and values come into conflict with their secular counterparts, the old ideas undergo stress and adaptation, but the influence works in both directions. Whether they do so consciously or unconsciously, entangled secularists engage with and sometimes borrow from older paradigms they believe they have surpassed. Something Old, Something New takes an unusual approach to this popular debate, and offers a new perspective in the conversation between believers and secularists. This is a book that theists, atheists, agnostics, and everyone still searching for the right label will find respectful but provocative.

Book Short Summary:

Deeply discouraged as an only child with dysfunctional parents, especially of his disillusionment of motherhood, Jerry Dunn carries emotional baggage with him as he later joins the Marines. Though he distinguishes himself in battle he is only further disillusioned by the typical self seeking actions of his superiors. His already damaged psyche takes a further hit after his discharge. He joins the Memphis Police Force where he again rises quickly in achievement, and escalates to Homicide Detective, only to find that nothing is different, only proof that men everywhere are full of dishonesty and hypocrisy. A moniker of “Dirty Jerry”, that he would not have chosen for himself, was attached to him by the press as a result of his heroics under fire. His search for something that was true and honorable, however, seemed to escape him at all turns and made him even bitterer. Suddenly and mysteriously, he finds himself embroiled in an extremely complicated and perverse murder case where he is astonishingly accused of the crime; a crime where nothing seems to fit proper Police procedure. The network of evil extends in many directions and threatens to engulf him along with many others. Just when he is at his peak of bitter cynicism, he sees a ray of sunshine in truth and integrity only to have it taken away, then returned and then taken away again in a shattering experience of an emotional and bizarre turn of events. The single ray of hope that he has looked for all his life, seems illusive at best. But may hinge on a very strange and conflicting set of heart rending circumstances, going against everything he has learned in his early life.

Book Short Summary:

Maybe she’s jilted you . . .” It was an impossible suggestion but after an hour, Owen secretly considered the possibility. The guests were understandably annoyed by the delay. Bridesmaids were no longer standing single file, instead they’d huddled up- gossiping about the bride’s whereabouts. The pastor, concerned, clutched his bible; preparing to offer spiritual support should she never show. Owen hands were shaking, “Something’s wrong. I can’t feel her anymore...” he said to Trent, the best man. Owen pretended to believe Trent’s reassurance but deep down inside Owen knew something had gone terribly wrong. The massive church doors burst opened. The crowd turned in unison. Owen sheltered his face from the sun’s sudden rays. When Owen could finally open his eyes, he saw the officers. Their soft, mournful faces gave answer before Owen could ask, but still he asked. “Has something happened to Jade?” “We’re afraid so. It’s bad, real bad. There’s not going to be a wedding today. In fact we’re gonna need you to come down to the shore. A body washed up, dressed up real pretty...We believe it may be Jade, you’re bride.” Lives intertwined, unknowingly attached to one another. All pushed to the point of sheer jealousy, volatile rage, devastating shame, and cold blooded murder. All hindered by countless misunderstood emotions, inapt feelings, agonizing secrets, and life-altering decisions that caused gaping aches to take root inside one another.

Book Short Summary:

A collection of poetry for the hopeless romantic in all of us. Each poem reflects love at first sight, the ache of love, and forever lasting love. Do you wonder why some people don’t understand what other people need, especially those they profess to love? It’s amazing how rampant neglect is. It’s not being greedy or spoiled, the need for communication and attention. Attention costs nothing. Not spending money on flowers but if you see one, pick it, and bring it home. A look and a touch are simple. A few words go a long way. People wonder why the other person gets disinterested. It blossoms at the start, but then dies when we get too busy with our lives. We chose to love that person because we want them in our lives. The newness, fluttering heart, their voice, and laugh, we must appreciate it and encourage it. We get too busy and too lazy and then when it is gone, we wonder why. Love needs nurturing. It doesn’t sustain itself. Reading this collection will inspire those to reflect on their own journey of love and relive those passionate moments in time.

Book Short Summary:

It is a story about an architect that has a poignant experience in a chapter of his life. The Bronte Moorland and the Annapurna Himalayas are used as vehicles to deliver the complex life of a free-spirited femme fatal, the Montagu Harrier (a slim and elegant bird of prey), and the power of love that she has over the man that is blindsided by her fascinating persona and affections. With a hint of humour and danger, it is also an anecdotal account of what effects pot smoking could have on an individual, their complex lifestyle, and the synergies.

Book Short Summary:

The only path to life (not mere survival) for a human being is the love of God. But what is love? There are many definitions of this short word and even more opinions about its meaning. There are also those who say that there are different types of love. However, Scripture simply states that God is Love and that love comes from God; so why is there such confusion about love? Part I of "Because God Is Love" exposes the passionate and alluring - yet deceptive - reasons behind this confusion of meaning; brings forth the simple truth about love in its human facet; and shows how everything else that has been called "love" is nothing other than a delusion that is akin to idolatry, and as such it is destructive and completely removed from the true love of the Lord our God: The only power that redeems, fulfills and provides meaning to the existence of those who wholeheartedly love Him.

Book Short Summary:

For Love Understood, almost 200 strangers in over 40 countries have come together to share their most personal stories, feelings, and insights about love. These are incredibly frank, intimate, and illuminating conversations, and author Laura Mucha has used these rare and varied insights as a springboard from which to dive into the subject of love, scrutinizing it from all angles--scientific, psychological, emotional, and philosophical. Romantic love is something that poets and artists have been trying to explain and define for centuries, but it's still one of the most complicated and intimidating terrains to navigate--especially when you're directly involved. Psychologists see it as a basic human drive, yet most people are afraid to be open and honest about it, until now. Each chapter begins with a personal story from someone Laura has spoken with, and then goes on to explore the questions and themes that have arisen from the account, intertwining the opinions of other interviewees with the empirical findings and insights of academics. The interviews allow readers to connect with people of all backgrounds, cultures, and ages. Sometimes they'll empathize, sometimes they'll be challenged and at other times they'll find comfort. Love Understood combines academic theory with everyday experience, and is for anyone who is curious about how we, as humans, work when it comes to romantic love.

Book Short Summary:

A look back at the cultural and political force of Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks, in celebration of her hundredth birthday Artist–Rebel–Pioneer Pulitzer-Prize winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks is one of the great American literary icons of the twentieth century, a protégé of Langston Hughes and mentor to a generation of poets, including Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, and Elizabeth Alexander. Her poetry took inspiration from the complex portraits of black American life she observed growing up on Chicago’s Southside—a world of kitchenette apartments and vibrant streets. From the desk in her bedroom, as a child she filled countless notebooks with poetry, encouraged by the likes of Hughes and affirmed by Richard Wright, who called her work “raw and real.” Over the next sixty years, Brooks’s poetry served as witness to the stark realities of urban life: the evils of lynching, the murders of Emmett Till and Malcolm X, the revolutionary effects of the civil rights movement, and the burgeoning power of the Black Arts Movement. Critical acclaim and the distinction in 1950 as the first black person ever awarded a Pulitzer Prize helped solidify Brooks as a unique and powerful voice. Now, in A Surprised Queenhood in the New Black Sun, fellow Chicagoan and award-winning writer Angela Jackson delves deep into the rich fabric of Brooks’s work and world. Granted unprecedented access to Brooks’s family, personal papers, and writing community, Jackson traces the literary arc of this artist’s long career and gives context for the world in which Brooks wrote and published her work. It is a powerfully intimate look at a once-in-a-lifetime talent up close, using forty-three of Brooks’s most soul-stirring poems as a guide. From trying to fit in at school (“Forgive and Forget”), to loving her physical self (“To Those of My Sisters Who Kept Their Naturals”), to marriage and motherhood (“Maud Martha”), to young men on her block (“We Real Cool”), to breaking history (“Medgar Evers”), to newfound acceptance from her community and her elevation to a “surprising queenhood” (“The Wall”), Brooks lived life through her work. Jackson deftly unpacks it all for both longtime admirers of Brooks and newcomers curious about her interior life. A Surprised Queenhood in the New Black Sun is a commemoration of a writer who negotiated black womanhood and incomparable brilliance with a changing, restless world—an artistic maverick way ahead of her time.

Her life at her new home was certainly a new experience, but it was too good to be true. Mariana, at a tender age, was exposed to sex by her foster father, who got her pregnant while she was still a child. From that point on, she became a lover of sex, which resulted in her many pregnancies. This riveting tale takes one deep into the life of a woman who fought for the life she wanted but faced many obstacles that forced her to go from one relationship to another. Book Short Summary:

In the eighteenth century, when the definition of marriage was shifting from one based on an hierarchical model to one based on notions of love and mutuality, marital life came under a more intense cultural scrutiny. This led to paradoxical forms of representation of marriage as simultaneously ideal and unlivable. Chris Roulston analyzes how, as representations of married life increased, they challenged the traditional courtship model, offering narratives based on repetition rather than progression. Beginning with English and French marital advice literature, which appropriated novelistic conventions at the same time that it cautioned readers about the dangers of novel reading, she looks at representations of ideal marriages in Pamela II and The New Heloise. Moving on from these ideal domestic spaces, bourgeois marriage is then problematized by the discourse of empire in Sir George Ellison and Letters of Mistress Henley, by troublesome wives in works by Richardson and Samuel de Constant, and by abusive husbands in works by Haywood, Edgeworth, Genlis and Restif de la Bretonne. Finally, the alternative marriage narrative, in which the adultery motif is incorporated into the marriage itself, redefines the function of heteronormativity. In exploring the theoretical issues that arise during this transitional period for married life and the marriage plot, Roulston expands the debates around the evolution of the modern couple.
