Book Short Summary:

If you found out you were dying, would you suddenly confess all your past sins? When former chart topper Tiffany Knightly learns that she's dying from cancer, she leaves behind her plush California lifestyle to return to Hempstead, New York, with Karlie, her reluctant teenage daughter. She hasn't simply gone home to die, though. Tiffany has another mission. She desperately wishes she could leave her past in the past, but in order to secure her daughter's future, she must tear open past wounds. Life wasn't always easy for Tiffany. With a stepfather who abused her and a mother who didn't believe her, she acted out by becoming promiscuous. Fifteen years later, she's back to reveal to her ex-husband that he might not be Karlie's biological father. In fact, there are four men who could have fathered Karlie—four that she's willing to acknowledge, anyway. As Tiffany reveals her truth and searches for Karlie's father, she reconnects with old friends and old lovers. Some reunions are happy, but some innocent lives are torn apart, leaving Tiffany to wonder if she's doing the right thing. Through it all, she will have to learn to rely on the healing power of God's unfathomable love. "There is no way Sing a New Song by Michelle Lindo-Rice could be a debut novel. The author's writing is crisp and her characters' emotions are authentic. Get ready, readers of Christian fiction. There is a new kid on the block that will minister to your soul!" —Pat Simmons, award-winning author of the Guilty series.

Book Short Summary:

Bliss Wiant went to China in 1923 with the lofty goal of some day introducing hymns to Chinese Christians that would not sound foreign to them. It was a goal that occupied much of his life. The locale of his work was Yenching University, which was arguably the premier institution of higher education in China. There he established a department of music, and enabled students to discover and develop their musical talents. There also he taught students who had never before seen a western musical score, to sing and to love Handel's Messiah and other great music of the west. In less than 10 years after its first performance, the reputation of the university chorus was such that it was invited by the government of China to present the Messiah in Nanking, the national capitol, as the finale to a two-week exposition of the arts. A major milestone in the pursuit of his life's goal was reached in that same year (1937), when a hymnal (English Title, "Hymns of Universal Praise") was published. This was the culmination of years of collaborative effort involving scores of individuals. Not only was the hymnal a uniquely inter-denominational achievement, it also included for the first time, a substantial number of original, indigenous hymns. Wiant's work in China produced in him a great love for the people as well as a deep admiration for their culture, which he saw both as misunderstood and unappreciated in the U.S. Consequently he devoted much of his energy in the years that followed to being a cultural ambassador, representing China to his own countrymen. An important manifestation of this was his work and that of his wife, Mildred, in translating into English a number of the Chinese hymns that first appeared in Hymns of Universal Praise. Several of these are now found in hymns used in the U.S., in effect closing a circle begun when Wiant went to China in 1923.

Book Short Summary:

This book of 170 original Christian poems and songs is offered for family and individual worship in the hope that ‘singing a new song to the Lord’ will refresh the excitement, wonder and joy of old truths that you have perhaps known for a long time. My friends of mature years are in my mind as I recall the medical maxim that ‘singing is good for the cardio-vascular system.” It is also good for the mind and soul to thoughtfully explore and even memorize Bible truths and poetically-condensed reminders of the marvellous love of God in Christ Jesus. So those who spend time alone may do their general health and mental alertness a favour by offering new praise to the Lord while they go about their normal home activities. Those unable to sing out loud for whatever reason may sing in their hearts with confidence that “He Who knows the heart” appreciates the heart’s song. This devotional content may also be shared in church groups, children's ministries and through personal correspondence. Psalm 912:1. "It is good to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High." Hebrews 13:15. "Therefore, let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name."

Book Short Summary:

In this exciting new spin on the memoir, Bernie Smith takes the opportunity of a world cruise with his beloved wife Judy to reflect on his past, his professional success and his personal philosophy on life and faith, both in quiet moments by himself and in conversations with fellow passengers on the trip. From a hardscrabble upbringing on Long Island, Smith eventually became a great success in the field of computer programming. It all started when he was accepted into Fairfield Prep in Connecticut even though his family could scarcely afford it, where the Jesuits taught him about faith in God that reinforced his childhood Catholicism and sustained him for the rest of his life. From there, he achieved all the status symbols a young boy from humble roots could hope for: an executive title, a mansion, a wife and kids. But it all began to seem much less important after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer that nearly killed him in middle age. While recuperating in Florida, Bernie met Judy, a ray of Southern sunshine who gave his life new meaning. Instead of being afraid of germs, health problems and other threats to his health and wealth, Bernie undertakes a new adventure - all the while bringing with him the lessons and wisdom from his past.

Book Short Summary:

Many people struggle with the book of Revelation because it is filled with strange symbols, numbers and bizarre images of beasts and visions. A blessing is promised (Rev 1:3) to all who read it but it cannot be received if one is intimidated by engaging the book. The key to understanding it lies in the context in which it was written which is the Old Testament. This book attempts to open up the reader to greater understanding of the book by giving the Old Testament references that John's readers would have been familiar with for the passages the Holy Spirit inspired John to write. .

Book Short Summary:

"... a book which asks and answers a new, interesting question, using a rich range of biblical and humanistic methodologies." -- Journal of Biblical Literature This book examines a literary form within the Bible that has slipped through the cracks of modern scholarship: the mixing of song and story in biblical narrative. Journeying from ancient Egyptian battle accounts to Aramaic wisdom texts to early retellings of biblical tales in the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish-Hellenistic literature, and rabbinic midrash, Steven Weitzman follows the history of this form from its origins as a congeries of different literary behaviors to its emergence as a self-conscious literary convention.

Psalm 5:3 says, ³At each and every sunrise you will hear my voice as I prepare my sacrifice of prayer to you. Every morning I lay out the pieces of my life on the altar and wait for your fire to fall upon my heart. Every emotion of our hearts is reflected in the Psalms with words that express our deepest and strongest feelings. Sighing is turned to singing and trouble into triumph. The Psalms provide comfort and joy, leading us to the place where worship flows. When discouraged or downcast, we can take new strength from reading them. They charge our batteries and fill our sails. Their thunder stirs us, and sweet melodies move us into the sacred emotions of a heart on fire. Dark rain clouds of grief turn to bright rainbows of hope as we meditate on Davids soul subduing songs. The Psalms are clearly poetic. They are praises placed inside poetry that spill out of a fiery passionate heart. The Psalms free us to become emotional, passionate, sincere worshippers. These 150 poetic masterpieces give us an expression of faith and worship. They become a mirror to the heart of Gods people in our quest to experience His presence.

Book Short Summary:

Psalms for Preaching and Worship a key addition to the critically acclaimed three-volume Lectionary Commentary / Despite the rich resources available for studying the Psalms, few are as focused on their place in worship and preaching as is this volume. The responsorial Psalms of the Revised Common Lectionary are here taken up in careful and often illuminating interpretation with attention also to their interaction with other lectionary texts. The many ways that psalms can function meaningfully in the liturgical life of congregations are explored especially in John Witvliet s concluding section. I know of no work that combines practice and substance better than this lectionary commentary. Patrick D. Miller / Princeton Theological Seminary / A fascinating book well organized, well written and edited, thorough, and informative. . . . An excellent resource not only for preachers using the Revised Common Lectionary but also for those wishing to preach a series of sermons on the Psalms. In addition, worship leaders and worship committees will appreciate the many excellent ideas for using the Psalms in worship. Highly recommended. Sidney Greidanus / author of Preaching Christ from the Old Testament and Preaching Christ from Genesis / Here is something even better than a simple completion of The Lectionary Commentary, which would be cause enough for gratitude. . . . Serious attention paid to this one book could go a long way toward remedying the scandalous neglect of the treasure of the Psalms in too much contemporary worship. Marguerite Shuster / Fuller Theological Seminary / Contributors: Nancy R. Bowen, William P. Brown, Walter Brueggemann, Richard J. Clifford, Nancy L. deClaiss-Walford, Jennifer S. Green, Karl N. Book Short Summary:

"To this day we have not the slightest idea what it was Jesus twice scribbled in the sand. By and large the commentaries have asked the wrong question through the ages. They labor over the content, over what he might have written. They ask what, without ever realizing the real question is why? It was not the content that mattered but why he did it. Unexpected. Irritating. Creative." Singer, songwriter and diligent student of Scripture, Michael Card is well known for the depth of his lyrics and the artistry of his music. But far more significant than the songs he has penned is the source of his inspiration--the creativity embodied in Jesus Christ, the incarnate Word of God. In his book Scribbling in the Sand Card explores the biblical foundations of true Christian creativity. Whether we think of ourselves as creative or not, all of us are created in the image of our Creator God, and thus creativity is a vital expression of our discipleship. This companion study guide provides eight sessions to help individuals and groups interact with the themes of Michael Card s book. With discussion questions, inductive Bible studies and creative exercises, each session provides opportunities for reflection, discovery and application. The user-friendly format makes this guide ideal for small groups, Sunday school classes or anyone who wants to enter into a life of Christian creativity.
