Book Excerpt :

Our Creator is a God of choice. Therefore, destruction is a choice. Honor is also a choice. A proud heart leads to destruction, but a humble heart brings honor. The absence of humility is pride which will bring certain consequences as a result of not humbling ourselves before God and men. Because of a man's haughty heart, he fails to see and reason clearly. His excessive arrogance results in poor decision-making, whereas a man with a humble heart will seek counsel and exercise wisdom in his decision-making. It was pride that brought Lucifer and a third of the angels to rebel and be cast out of heaven. Because of his pride, Lucifer will suffer eternal destruction. Humility is the true spirit of Jesus Christ. Because of His humility, God exalted Him above all creatures. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. (1 Peter 5:6)

“Waiting Upon the Lord” is a prayer journal for expectant mothers. It is an invitation to open your heart to the wonder and mystery that is taking place within you. It is an invitation to pray, to ponder and to prepare for the gift of a new life. We dream of being loving mothers. We want our children to have a better life. We want our children to be happy. But all we really know is what we have experienced from our own mothers and our own families. So I invite you to come away for a little while each day and walk with your Mother Mary, the mother of Jesus. We will do this through mediation and prayer of the first three Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. Each week has a teaching and special gifts and graces for which to ask. As you pray and ponder the scripture and teachings, you will want to write down any special intentions, thoughts, or answered prayers that you have received. As your heart opens to God’s grace and the companionship of your Mother Mary, you will find that peace and joy fill your heart. Mother Mary will take you and your family under her mantle of protection. Mary is your mother. She loves you. You will come to know the joy of having a mother and a friend by your side every day. And when your precious baby is born, you will know that God is with you and you will never walk alone. When your child matures, you may want to consider giving your journal to them as a gift and an expression of your love for them.

Book Short Summary:

Humility and Pride is a comprehensive book on Christian humility, from its true meaning and significance in a Christian life to an everyday guide to cultivating humility in our own hearts. Jesus often referred to humility as a necessary condition for acquiring the heavenly kingdom and eternal life. He also left us the most profound and perfect example of humility. The fundamental role of humility is also explained in the writings of the Early Church Fathers and further illustrated by their own lives. This book offers a diligent summary of these sermons, writings and personal examples. Humility can only be acquired through grace, but we first need to understand what humility means and why it is important, have a desire to acquire it and be willing to practice it in our everyday lives. A former abbot and a prominent bishop, the author offers a detailed, down to-earth guidance on how to prepare our hearts for Gods grace.

Book Short Summary:

"A book you will want to read and read again." -- Eugene Peterson Afterword by Bono. How can we find a more transparent, resilient, and fearless life of faith? The book of Psalms has been central to God's people for millennia, across all walks of life and cultural contexts. In reading it, we discover that we are never alone in our joys, sorrows, angers, doubts, praises, or thanksgivings. In it, we learn about prayer and poetry, honesty and community, justice and enemies, life and death, nations and creation. Open and Unafraid shows us how to read the psalms in a fresh, life-giving way, and so access the bottomless resources for life that they provide. "David Taylor’s take is 'open and unafraid' alright. He really goes there, exposing himself before God in the most beautiful way. He might have called the book Naked, because if you don’t find your own self feeling a little exposed here, it might be time to take some armor off." -- Bono, from the Afterword "A book that you will want to read and read again, and yet again, in order to discover the wisdom of the Psalms that shows us how to walk in the life-giving way of Jesus." -- Eugene Peterson, from the Foreword "A winsome, accessible entry into the Book of Psalms…Connects the poetry of the psalms to real-life wonders and struggles." -- Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary "Taylor reads these biblical prayers with Dr. Seuss, rappers, and other poets, along with theologians and the daily news....Guides readers in tracing out patterns of holy speech that have the potential for healing our hearts and our communities." -- Ellen F. Davis, Duke Divinity School "I have always loved the psalms--for their defiant devotion, their deep joy, and their brutal yet beautiful honesty. And after reading this fantastic book about them, I love them even more." -- Matt Redman, worship leader and song writer "In these fraught and fearsome days, we need the psalms more than ever. And we need more faithful artists and thinkers like David Taylor to mine the infinite gifts the psalms offer across the ages." -- Karen Swallow Prior, author of Fierce Convictions

Book Short Summary:

Repentance consists not only in lagging behind external great sins, but in changing the mind and heart and in updating the inner state. That is, you need to turn away from all the hustle and bustle of this world, since it prevents anyone who wants to be saved to consider various spiritual weaknesses, that is, pride, anger, envy, uncleanness, love of money and so on, and to regret and lament that such evil entered through snake venom our soul, which was created pure and immaculate. And with such pity and regret, praying to Christ so that by His power he will correct and heal us. And when the heart or the internal state changes and is corrected, then the external life and external affairs will be good. Legs will not go to evil if the soul does not want to. Hands will not do evil if the will does not want to. The tongue will not speak evil if the heart does not want to. The body will not be fornication * * * True repentance and faith will certainly be followed by the correction and renewal of the heart and outer life. True repentance and faith renews and corrects a person, turns away from the bustle of the world, moves to desire and the search for eternal life, teaches the fear of God, incessantly exhorts against all sin to fight, and to do good and please God. * * * And when we look ahead ... we will see death that leaves no one. And the more we live, the more it approaches us. This limit of God is both unknown to us and very terrible. Unknown because the old and young, infants and youths, ready and unprepared, righteous and sinful, indiscriminately abduct. It is terrible because from here begins an endless, constant, always abiding eternity. From here we are either in eternal bliss, or in eternal torment, or in a place of joy, or in a place of crying. Now we either live forever, or die forever, either reign forever in heaven with Christ and His saints, or begin to suffer forever in hell with Satan and his angels.

Book Short Summary:

Living by Grace in an Ungracious World is not accomplished by self-effort. The word “grace” can describe the smooth movement of a ballerina, or the long stride of an Olympic runner, or even geese flying in formation in the sky. Certainly, this gives some idea that grace is a thing of beauty. However, the Biblical doctrine of grace has a much greater meaning for the Christian because it is not possible without the intervention of God Himself. We will find in this book that biblical grace is granted from the Sovereign God who brings that wonderful life through salvation and sanctification. Our part is developed through a personal mindset and personal relationships by yielding to God’s power. True life in Christ is to be living by grace. This is the road less traveled, but the best road to walk on through our sojourn on earth as Christians.

Everyone wants to know how to talk to God and get answers to their prayers. Yet most people are skeptical of prayer, or convinced they’re doing it wrong. Is there a secret to talking with God? God is more concerned about the condition of our hearts than the words we use. He cares more about the posture of our hearts than the posture of our bodies. And what is the right heart posture? Humility. The Secret to Prayer will take readers on a 31-day journey, examining the heart and actions of biblical characters whose prayers were answered. On the other side of the journey, readers will have a more vibrant prayer life, and a more intimate relationship with the God to whom we pray.

Book Short Summary:

In her study Chaoluan Kao offers a comprehensive investigation of popular piety at the time of the European Reformations through the study of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Protestant prayerbooks. It pursues a historical-contextual approach to spirituality by integrating social and religious history in order to yield a deeper understanding of both the history of Christian piety and of church history in general. The study explores seven prayerbooks by German authors and seventeen English prayerbooks from the Reformation and post-Reformation as well as from Lutheran, Anglican, and Puritan traditions, examining them as spiritual texts with social and theological significance that helped disseminate popular understandings of Protestant piety. Early Protestant piety required intellectual engagement, emphasized a faithful and heartfelt attitude in approaching God, and urged regular exercise in prayer and reading. Early Protestant prayerbooks modeled for their readers a Protestant piety that was a fervent spiritual practice solidly grounded in the social context and connections of its practitioners. Through those books, Reformation could be understood as redefining the meanings of people’s spiritual lives and re-discovering of a pious life. In a broader sense, they functioned as a channel of historical and spiritual transition, which not only tells us the transformation and transmission of Reformation historically but also signifies the development of Christian spirituality. The social-historical study of the prayerbooks furthers our understanding of continuity, change, and inter-confessional influence in the Christian piety of early modern Europe.

Book Short Summary:

Revival is bringing something that is dead back to life. Much of today’s Church needs reviving. When God comes in an unusual way, releasing His presence and power over and above what a church normally experiences, we call it a visitation of God. Every visitation of God should become a habitation of God and become a move of God, going beyond that local church into the community, city, and nation. The move of God results in evangelization, missions, and the fulfilling of the Great Commission. Starting in the book of Acts and down through the centuries, there have been numerous visitations and moves of God. We look at Church history. Understanding history helps us correctly interpret the present and prepare for the future. We draw inspiration, insight, and lessons from what God has done in the past, by reviewing stories, and asking relevant questions: What can we learn from Church history about revivals, visitations, and moves of God? What does it take for a visitation of God to become a move of God? What are signs of a genuine visitation of God? How do we steward a revival, a visitation, and a move of God? The “latter rain” falls just before harvest. “Therefore, be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand” (James 5:7-8). In biblical context, the early rains were showers that usually came during October-November and prepared the ground for the seed. The latter rain fell during March-April and was necessary for the ripening of the crops before harvest. If we believe God is preparing for a mighty endtime outpouring, a great visitation, and ingathering of harvest before His return, then we must get ourselves and our congregations ready for the latter rain of the Holy Spirit. Book Short Summary:

Many books focus on how to grow a church and "succeed" as a pastor, but few help clergy cope with the daily pressures they face in juggling the demands of ministry, family, and personal ambitions. David Horner overturns the notion that pastors must accept disobedience in some aspects of life to thrive in others. Examining his thirty years of pastoral ministry, Horner mines seven key challenges that pastors must face well in order to restore and maintain a healthy balance. Church leaders and those who love them will find this book a practical and biblical guide that reinvigorates their calling.

Book Short Summary:

This Doctor of the Church, in a lifetime crowded with absorbing activities—as ruler of his Order for almost twenty years, as Cardinal-Bishop, as director of the deliberations of an ecumenical council—yet became one of the Church’s supreme expositors of the theology of love. From the first he was known to be a giant, and succeeding centuries saw almost innumerable editions of his works. Archbishop Paschal Robinson has pointed out that no writer from the Middle Ages onward has been more widely read and copied. Yet comparatively little of this interest is reflected in publications in the English tongue. Of course, the Prince of Mystics (as Leo XIII called him) is not wholly unknown among us. So great is the power of his genius, so insistent his message to the heart and spirit, that these qualities have in some degree forced their way through whatever barriers exist. Translators of merit, both Franciscans and others, have brought over into English separate chosen opera; and these have conveyed enough of his greatness to establish it as a fact. But though he is an acknowledged master, he remains, by and large, to us a master still unread.

Book Short Summary:

At one time or another, most Christians struggle with depression, discouragement, or despondency. When this happens, spiritual joy is the great need. William Farley has written a practical book to help flawed human beings discover and implement the secret to spiritual joy. The author contends that the gospel is the key to a life overflowing with joy. That is because a right understanding of the gospel produces the humility that motivates a life of continual thanksgiving. A heart humbled by the gospel is the well from which stressed believer can draw the gratitude that generates spiritual joy. This book also examines common joy-killers like grumbling, complaining, boasting, and self-pity, and provides practical suggestions for conquering them. Such attitudes cannot co-exist in a heart saturated with gospel-gratitude. Ultimately, a clear grasp of the cross is the secret to spiritual joy.

Book Short Summary:

The word of God, being the most true and perfect rule of piety, as said, all Christians need, but shepherds, that is, bishops and priests, especially: for they took the “key of understanding” ( Luke 11:52 ), which is the word of God “No one can serve two masters ,” says the Lord ( Matt. 6:24 ). About this, St. John Chrysostom teaches: “Do not tell me that you are not worshiping the golden idol, but show me that you are not doing what the gold commands you to do. For the images of idolatry are different: one honors the mammon for gentlemen, another - the womb for God, another - the most universal lust. You do not devour oxen like the Greeks, but much worse, you slaughter your soul; you don’t kneel, you don’t worship, but with great obedience you do everything that commands you womb, gold and lust torment. Therefore, the Greeks are vile, because our passions have been enriched.” (Conversation 6 on the Epistle to the Romans).

Book Short Summary:

God needs people who are filled with the Holy Spirit, who are worried about their own will or future, and who have adopted the character of the Lord Jesus. These people need to think like He thinks, speak like He speaks, behave like He behaves, and feel like He feels. These people must embrace their faith in the Lord Jesus in order to be tools in God's hands and reveal His character to the world. The Lord Jesus said that many are called but few are chosen. But who is chosen. But who is chosen? How are they identified? Why were anointed men of the past different from men today? In The Profile of a Man of God, Bishop Macedo tries to answer these and many other questions based on what he has seen in the Work of God and, above all, in His Word.

We all know that life can be hard, and working in the garden and trying to grow a garden is hard work. In our lives, if we want to grow spiritually closer to God, it takes work and effort in each of our hearts. The truth that God gives us is from his Word. It is the seeds that we need to plant in our lives and be willing to accept. The seed has to have water so it can grow. We need the active working of God in our lives so the truth can come alive in our lives. As we grow, we need be close to Gods will in our lives, in the light of His will for our lives, so we can continue to grow for him. As God prepares us to do his work, we must be rooted in the foundational truths that God has for us in his Word. Like a garden, we have to be aware of the dangers that come in and can contaminate our effectiveness for God. All the steps that we need to take so that we might be fruitful for God, to have a final product that is worthy before God when one day we meet him. I hope that you will take the journey and see that you too can have a beautiful garden for God.

Book Short Summary:

WHAT A GREAT WORD! is a new kind of devotional. With Scripture and fresh insights from author Karen Moore, readers are able to focus on one word each day to strengthen their faith and see God's hand at work. These are simple words, words we use every day that we often gloss over when reading God's Word. If, for example, the word for the day is "protect," the reading from Psalm 121:6-8 declares: "The Lord will protect you from all dangers; He will guard your life." Readers will then see how the Lord protects our lives. He is the One who defends us, guards us, and keeps us safe. With one simple word, readers will move from hoping the Lord will protect us, to believing He will act on our behalf. Now that's a Great Word! "What a Great Word! is a beautiful way to spend a few minutes each day focusing on what is really important and growing into the person God created us to become." -- Jean Ziglar, wife of Zig Ziglar

Book Short Summary:

The Godly Man's Picture, Drawn with a Scripture Pencil, or, Some Characteristic Marks of a Man who is Going to Heaven. The soul being so precious, and salvation so glorious—it is the highest point of prudence to make preparations for the eternal world. It is beyond all dispute, that there is an inheritance in light; and it is most strenuously asserted in Holy Scripture that there must be a fitness and suitability for it (Col. 1:12). If anyone asks, "Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord?" the answer is, "He who has clean hands, and a pure heart" (Psalm 24:4). To describe such a person is the work of this ensuing treatise. Here you have the godly man's portrait, and see him portrayed in his full lineaments

Book Short Summary:

God’s Relationship with a Troubled Generation seeks to shed light on the increasing neglect of God and faith by many among the present generation. Considering the global pandemic, political tension, and social injustice that have plagued the world, many people seeks answers about God’s truth and position in times like these while some others are discouraged about the truth in God’s Word and justice. The book raises interesting and insightful views on life’s biggest misery (death), offers biblical and historical facts on the truth about the divinity of God, challenges the evolution theory, discusses and warns against common misconceptions about God, ungodly doctrines, and why Christianity is different and unique. Furthermore, it discusses why it is one’s sole responsibility to seek the truth about the existence of God and the afterlife, explaining what God expects from us according to his own standards. In conclusion, it analyzes how God has always sought to be in a relationship with man from the beginning of time and how that relationship has been kept from the past generations to the present. This book focuses on the principles of love, obedience, and justice, which detail how God has shown love to man and how he expects obedience in return. When we fail to obey his commands, he is only just to discipline and correct us for failure to heed his instructions after several warnings. Since ignorance of the law is no excuse, one’s ignorance of the law of God, whether one believes in him or not, will not exonerate one after death as the current life is only temporary. Therefore, the book shows why it’s important to seek God’s desired relationship with man before death as tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone.
