Book Excerpt :

This Top Five Classics illustrated edition of Jack London’s The Call of the Wild and White Fang includes: • More than 30 illustrations from the original editions of The Call of the Wild and White Fang by Philip R. Goodwin, Charles Livingston Bull, and Frank E. Schoonover • London’s 1908 essay, “The Other Animals,” his response to Teddy Roosevelt’s accusation of being a “nature-faker” • A helpful introduction, author bio, and bibliography Based in large part upon Jack London’s own experiences as a prospector during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1893, The Call of the Wild traces the untaming of Buck, a St. Bernard–Scotch shepherd mix taken from his comfortable home in the Santa Clara Valley to the frozen wilds of the Yukon. Published in 1903, the book vaulted London to international fame. Three years later, he wrote White Fang, the story of a wolf-dog who undergoes the opposite journey from the northern wilderness to civilization and domestication. Both books would become synonymous with the author and have rightly remained beloved classics for over a century.

Book Short Summary:

The Call of the Wild is regarded as Jack London's masterpiece. Based on London's experiences as a gold prospector in the Canadian wilderness and his ideas about nature and the struggle for existence, The Call of the Wild is a tale about unbreakable spirit and the fight for survival in the frozen Alaskan Klondike. The story takes place in the extreme conditions of the Yukon during the 19th-century Klondike Gold Rush where strong sled dogs were in high demand. After Buck, a domesticated dog, is snatched from a pastoral ranch in California, he is sold into a brutal life as a sled dog. The work details Buck's struggle to adjust and survive the cruel treatment he receives from humans, other dogs, and nature. He eventually sheds the veneer of civilization altogether and instead relies on primordial instincts and the lessons he has learned to become a respected and feared leader in the wild. White Fang is the story of a wild dog's journey toward becoming civilized in the Canadian territory of Yukon during the Klondike gold rush at the end of the nineteenth century. White Fang is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to Jack London's best-known work, The Call of the Wild, which concerns a kidnapped civilized dog turning into a wild wolf. The book is characteristic of London's precise prose style and his innovative use of voice and perspective. Much of the novel is written from the viewpoint of the animals, allowing London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. Jack London (1876–1916) was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. A pioneer in the world of commercial magazine fiction, he was one of the first writers to become a worldwide celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing. He was also an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction.

Book Short Summary:

White Fang is a novel by Jack London, published in 1906. The story details White Fang's journey to domestication in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work, The Call of the Wild (1903). Much of White Fang is written from the viewpoint of the wolf-dog, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. White Fang examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. The book also explores complex themes including morality and redemption. As early as 1925, the story was adapted to film, and it has since seen several more cinematic adaptations.

Book Short Summary:

The boundless and severe northern regions leave an indelible imprint on the lives of people and animals. Their irresistible force is capable of breaking anyone, and only the most courageous and hardy can overcome this force. The main character of Jack London's story - no, not a man - but a wolf named White Fang was exactly like that. He mastered this science perfectly to survive in any unfavorable conditions. The writer describes in details the psychology, motives and behavior of White Fang, shows how kindness and affection towards a living being teaches him to pay with love for love. And for a clever tamed wolf, love was more precious than life. Illustrated by Valeriia Gogina.

Book Short Summary:

"Dark spruce forest frowned on either side the frozen waterway. The trees had been stripped by a recent wind of their white covering of frost, and they seemed to lean towards each other, black and ominous, in the fading light. A vast silence reigned over the land. The land itself was a desolation, lifeless, without movement, so lone and cold that the spirit of it was not even that of sadness. There was a hint in it of laughter, but of a laughter more terrible than any sadness-a laughter that was mirthless as the smile of the sphinx, a laughter cold as the frost and partaking of the grimness of infallibility. It was the masterful and incommunicable wisdom of eternity laughing at the futility of life and the effort of life. It was the Wild, the savage, frozen-hearted Northland Wild..."

Book Short Summary:

The story begins before the three-quarters wolf-dog hybrid is born, with two men and their sled dog team on a journey to deliver a coffin to a remote town named Fort McGurry in the higher area of the Yukon Territory, Canada. The men, Bill and Henry, are stalked by a large pack of starving wolves over the course of several days. Finally, after all of their dogs and Bill have been eaten, four more teams find Henry trying to escape from the wolves; the wolf pack scatters when they hear the large group of people coming. The story then follows the pack, which has been robbed of its last prey. When the pack finally brings down a moose, the famine is ended; they eventually split up, and the story now follows a she-wolf and her mate, One Eye. The she-wolf gives birth to a litter of five cubs by the Mackenzie River, and all but one die from hunger. One Eye is killed by a lynx while trying to rob its den for food for the she-wolf and her cub; his mate later discovers his remains near the lynx's den. The surviving cub and the she-wolf are left to fend for themselves. Shortly afterward, the she-wolf kills all the lynx kittens, prompting the lynx to track her down, and a vicious fight breaks out. The she-wolf eventually kills the lynx but suffers severe injury; the lynx carcass is devoured over a period of seven days.

Book Short Summary:

Read & Co. Classics presents this brand new edition of "The Call of the Wild" (1903), a short novel written by Jack London. Jack London (1876-1916), born John Griffith Chaney, was an American writer, social activist and journalist. As a young man he joined the Klondike Gold Rush migration in Canada between 1896 and 1899, a formative period that would influence his writing themes. Along with the novel “White Fang” (1906), the central character in “The Call of the Wild” is a dog. It is a story of Buck’s survival, heroism, communality and rebirth, and uses symbolism and anthropomorphism to convey human themes. The book’s appraisal of nature is considered as exemplary of an enduring trait in American literature, as well as a critique of industrialisation. London was also part of “The Crowd” in San Francisco, a literary group known for its radical interests in socialism and workers’ rights.
